Ambassador Kristie Kenney confirmed yesterday that Nasa had decided to move the "Southeast Asia Composition, Cloud, Climate Coupling Regional Study" to another Southeast Asian nation.

Anybody know what other nation that would be?

I guess Cambodia, as it is about the weather over the disputed marine areas with the oil fields....Over oil fields is often very interesting weather.

The USA is a debtor nation, it does not have the money.

Unfortunately, when you own the printing press, you never run out of money, and no one is going to not accept the greenback.

Common sense and a lack of paranoia.

You disagree why?

Thailand has been working with a range of different organisations, including NASA, JAXA on these types of topics. Funding ebbs, and funding flows. Sometimes, Thailand actively says 'no' as at that point in time, they might not have the resources to devote to a pet project someone else has. At other times, it is indeed stuborness and miscommunication. And yes, money can be wasted. This isn't one of those times.

With compliments to the Yellow shirts who always put China first and Thailand second. They are as stupid as the extremists in Pakistan who claim also that the US is using a vaccination program to make people sick. The yellows thought that NASA would poison Thais and their Chinese friends. At least they can celebrate with Shark fin soup.

During the great flood, The US had offered to help the population with clean water from their aircraft carrier facility nearby but this also was met with a negative from the same government. Then the aircraft carrier simply left...

Right you are. Excellent article below explaining the sutuation.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hRbSAMo0WnRBy1U6H3PTmbZlrbuA?docId=CNG.a9e4b16a0529fb9f02391f9eb3cdd346.301

I recall reading about that in the states. What a shame

I recalled that a carrier can supply the electrical needs of a city of 500K. Along with fresh water production and all the vehicles that could have been used in support of emergency services. not to mentioned 5000 service personnel semi trained for this sort of thing (quick tactical logistics and emergency rescue). Thats just for the carrier. The support group had additional capability including diesel fuel and food.

All that for just the cost of good will,

and the opportunity to help a friendly country in need,

was refused.

National pride is one thing

Needless national suffering is another.

See how nice she is, not to rub the Thai noses in it, by naming names.

The USA is a debtor nation, it does not have the money.

What does that have to do with scientific research spending? NASA's atmospheric (non-space) budget is over $5B for this year. Someone needs to do pure research.

Big Brother simply moved across a local border, offered some compensation and handouts and got what they wanted, the ability to monitor the Chinese. Weather monitoring? :cheesy:

Stated by an acknowledged expert on US espionage.

The headline: "NASA, US's foremost spy agency, outed by expat in Thailand." PLA awards medal.

All the Special Forces and Green Beret experts on this thread clearly have their inside information which I don't have.

The headline makes out that it is NASA that pulled out, not the lame Thai politicians that could not get there act together in time for the project. Then last week coming up with the face saving BS about wanting to work with NASA provided Thailand had more input into the project. What input and expertise does Thailand have to offer NASA...how to make som tum?

Because of the politicians thailand has definitely an L Shape on their forehead for this project.

"I cannot say right now whether we will allow the US space agency to use our skies to conduct its research after it decided to set up base in another country,"

Should NASA point out that the project is finished, and that they've been overflying Thailand and nobody noticed?

This apparently eluded many in this thread also.

Saving face assumes something to save in the first place.

OLD News - the progect is already completed but kudos to THE NATION for putting a positve spin on things .... nothing to do with our internecine political infighting - no nothing to do with that at all

Nothing to see here ... move along now

biggrin.png

OLD News, you are correct on that fact . This proposal by NASA was submitted in 2010 to the then Thai government, It was not acted on mainly because of fears it would be used for spying purposes, The Nation ran this story in may 2011 when NASA pulled out because of insufficient time to coordinatate operations for their june 2011 deadline. You are correct It was not yesterday!

Its funny all the other SE Asian countries dont see it that way. In fact they where all fighting over the opportunity to host the biggest science research project NASA has ever planned.

BTW the US has several other agencies to monitor the Chinese. They really dont need the help of NASA.

And I'm pretty sure, that if they want to fly over Thailand or use Thai air space they will.. What are the Thai's going to do, launch a missle at them?

Most likely throw a copy LV bag at the jet and if it does not work spit the "copy" dummy biggrin.png

Quite possibly, but China needs monitoring. They have tensions at nearly every country they border (and beyond). Their military budget is expanding exponentially (in 2011 it grew 15%, and they aren't going to release the numbers for 2012). No wonder Thai gov't officials dropped the ball with hosting NASA. Nearly all large businesses and most Thai politicians are Chinese-Thai (Shinawatres included).

On the other side of the coin, a NASA facility in Thailand would enable exposure by Thais to science and cutting edge technology - but Thais care much more about whitening creams and TV soaps. In reality, Thai politicians simply forgot about the pending issue with NASA - they're too busy servicing their mia noi, playing golf, and planning their next shmooze session with Thaksin.

or bailing their "erstwhile" sons out of trouble !

In January '42 Thailand declared war on the United States,In July'69 NASA put the first man on the moon.In 2012 NASA asked Thailand to partner in meteorological research. In 2013 Thailand refused NASAs request. Those who can't learn from history.....

And declared war against England too.

Agreed: Just another cock-up by the Shinawatra - I mean Thai - government.

We do not need to be close to any country physically to watch a country and NASA especially is not the agency used for the task despite the fact that they do use TR1 and the SR-71 in some of their atmospheric tests. Monitoring any country can be done with HUMINT, SIGNIT, GEOSPATIAL and IMAGERY sources. HUMINT is the only source that is physically in country as a human source planted in country to blend in and gather intel information as what we know as a spy. Big brother is always watching and Thailand's ignorant refusal of allowing NASA inside will not change things for us.

People in Thailand are extremely concerned about losing face on a personal

level. But given the endless wacky decisions by the government, with this NASA debacle being one, apparently losing face simply does not apply on a national level..

Posted

From what i have seen of most Thai political leaders over the years, they appear to be uneducated self centered ignorant twits on a par with the average Isaan village rice grower. Yes there are a few smart ones such as Abishit and Taksin but not many.

Thais talk about the importance of face. In this instance, they forced the US Ambassador to lose face when they made her wait last year and then said "no" to the project proposal. Did they not understand that she lost face, having to tell her administration back in Washington DC that she was unable to gain Thai cooperation? I think turnabout is fair play. The Thais can say they are ready all they want... but if she says "no thanks" (to be read as: f*** you!), then the Thai bureaucrats can go back and try to explain why the US is conducting studies with other countries in the region and Thailand is not benefitting from the outcomes... or even from the "aura" of cooperation with the entity that put man on the moon using duct tape and chewing gum while Thailand can't even get 3G running 40 years later.

PS - NASA did the project with Vietnam... and gave them preferential rice prices!

(just kidding... I have no idea!)
