UN tightens sanctions as N. Korea threatens nuclear attack
2013-03-08 07:33:45 GMT+7 (ICT) NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) -- North Korea on Thursday threatened the United States with a preemptive nuclear strike in response to military exercises, just hours before the United Nations (UN) Security Council voted in favor of tough new sanctions to punish the reclusive country for its latest nuclear test. Resolution 2094, the council's fifth resolution since 2006, strengthens and significantly expands the scope of UN sanctions which were already in place. The sanctions aim to significantly impede North Korea's ability to further develop nuclear and ballistic missile programs, as well as its proliferation activities. The 15-member Council unanimously adopted the tightened sanctions, which target the country's trade and banking, as well as travel by targeted officials. In addition, the Council demanded that the country retract its announcement of withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and reaffirmed its demand for North Korea to abandon all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programs. An existing ban on North Korean trade in items related to its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and officials involved in them includes a number of items in the resolution's annexes, ranging from "pyrotechnically actuated valves" to luxury goods such as jewelry with pearls and race cars. The resolution approved on Thursday also extends the UN Security Council's travel ban and asset freeze to additional individuals and companies, including those involved in the trade of arms-related material and to the Second Academy of Natural Sciences in North Korea's capital of Pyongyang. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on North Korea and all other Member States to fully comply with the resolution, reaffirming his commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through dialogue. He also expressed concern due to the increased tension in the region, which remains technically in a state of war. The decision to adopt the new sanctions came just hours after North Korea's foreign ministry threatened to launch a preemptive nuclear strike against the United States in response to massive military exercises in the region this month. This comes just days after North Korea said it will declare the Korean War Armistice Agreement nullified from March 11. "Now that the U.S. is set to light a fuse for a nuclear war, the revolutionary armed forces of the DPRK will exercise the right to a preemptive nuclear attack to destroy the strongholds of the aggressors and to defend the supreme interests of the country," a foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement, referring to the country by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The Korean Armistice Agreement, signed in July 1953, put into force a cease-fire in an effort to end the Korean War. In Thursday's statement, the spokesman said that it will no longer be restrained by the agreement from March 11, warning that its military will be able to take action for "self-defense against any target at any moment. "U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland noted that threats from North Korea are not surprising but that it would take them seriously. "Let me just take this opportunity to say that the United States is fully capable of defending against a DPRK ballistic missile attack," she said. "Furthermore, we are continuing to upgrade our ballistic missile defense capabilities. We remain firmly committed to the defense of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and Japan and the maintenance of regional peace and security." Sanctions were first imposed on North Korea by the UN Security Council following nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009, including a ban on the import of nuclear and missile technology. The sanctions were further tightened in January 2013 after the country launched a long-range Unha-3 rocket which North Korea claimed to be a weather satellite, but other countries described it as a long-range missile test in disguise. tvn.png

Well Well Well if it isnt Little chubby wubby stating he can take on the Might of the Nation with the Power to blow the whole earth to smithereens in seconds..

And what does he want China to lose trade deals so they have to keep their Little waving gold cats and red lanterns at home?

If this idiot does take us down the path to more war, It is not going to be pretty.

I remeber a show on Nostradamus prediciting this kind of thing which I dismiossed as rubbish... Maybe not.

And the good news if you can say any ... No more USA debt. 47% of the economy runs on war.

This is indeed a very distressing article give Japanes and Phillipino tensions with China, China also being the main aly in the Korean Was and still an ally.. all words but they will support Korea as they also have territorial ambitions.

I think this is something we all need to look out for.

....... ya, little prick-syndrome!

If this idiot does take us down the path to more war, It is not going to be pretty.

I hope the technology of 'remote control war-game' is fast developing.... the US army couldn't get its head out of its ass in Afganistan and Iraq how the hell could you ever expect to take on a massive army like they have......you gonna get yo ass kicked again....this time for real.

And the good news if you can say any ... No more USA debt. 47% of the economy runs on war.

Ya....same old insanity-mother-earth....."no trouble,no business"........ debt?.....so just keep printing money, that will work, right?
The real scary thing is that America may be 'forced' into major war in order to keep from sliding into the (inevitable) abyss of economic collapse.

At this point the world needs more than 'Luck' Edited by HaleySabai

I agree with everything you say, and you are ahead of most people in realizing there's a lot of war-like tension with Japan and the Philippines vs China. This as you know is apart from the tensions with N. Korea.

I'm just not sure where you get the 47%. The US budget will be about 3.8 trillion this year (shameful waste) and about 24% of that will be for military. The US GDP will be about 16 trillion, making the defense budget a much smaller percentage of that.

Are you comparing to something I'm not considering?

First, as posted above there are some very destressing and troublesome things brewing in Asia which could indeed start a war between Japan and China. Then we have this rogue nation N. Korea. I have two things to say.

1. If that dumb bastard in N. Korea decides to nuke someone, this won't be playing patsy like Afghanistan. The US is, right now, moving much of its naval forces into Asia, reopening bases in the Philippines and strengthening Guam. One nuclear sub of many in the area could launch ICBMs and flatten N. Korea. Just one.

2. If China or N. Korea goes rogue, ya'll will be crying for the US to take over. The whole world will. China spends just 10% of what the US spends on military, and even then their hardware is decades behind. The only equalizer is nukes. In a conventional war, the US has China so outclassed in quality and quantity of hardware that the whole world depends on the US to keep China in check.

Criticize today, cry for mamma tomorrow.

I would say that the Allies kicked the shit out of Germany and Japan in WWII. That's the last time the Allies took the gloves off and fought to win. Now it's all run so PC by the politicians that no one can win.

Since there is nothing democratic about North Korea, the UN should also rub some salt in their wounds by removing the word 'Democratic" from the used name of that country and just call it 'North Korea' - or maybe 'Undemocratic Republic of Korea' clap2.gif

Actually, it's a useful marker -- every country that calls itself a Democratic/Socialist Republic is in fact bound to be a Communist dictatorship.

But unfortunately, China has something so abundant but so abhorrent to most of the civilized world to use without regard, which it cares absolutely nothing about - manpower! Civilized countries would be reluctant to just kill all those poor soldiers who were tossed into the war like fodder in a cow barn.

Well, I get the tongue-in-cheek, but who felt sorry for Hitler's troops at the Battle of the Bulge? They had lots of weapons and inflicted massive casualties on the Allied forces before they were defeated. The Chinese troops would do the same. The Allies have stealth fighters and bombers that can fly so high that the Chinese don't have rockets that can reach that high, even if they could see them. The Chinese would be carpet bombed and shelled from offshore.

If you think about it, the Allies had no trouble taking out Saddam Hussein's troops, his equipment, palaces or even Hussein. It was after he was defeated and an attempt at peacekeeping was made that the real trouble started. The enemy didn't wear uniforms and hid among the general population. The rules were that you couldn't kill civilians. Yet the enemy hid among civilians to come out and plant IEDs, do suicide bombings, do sniper attacks and then they ran back into the population. Remember the carpet bombing of Hussein's troops?

The Allies need to stop fighting anyone with the current rules of engagement. It doesn't allow the Allies to use their strength. You never know who the enemy is until there's an ambush or an IED or a suicide bombing.

US is fine. Unemployment down to 7.7 and 246,000 new private sector jobs created last month. Best we have looked since right before the shit hit the fan in 08.

Our problem is that after we level a country we stick around to try and stabilize. Probably the humane gesture or route, but very unwise in terms of American lifes and costs.

I have a feeling we would just raize a couple of key Korean cities and targets and be done with it. Bunker busters and a few tactical nukes if they really step out of line. There is simply no need for US troops in Korea and Korea has nothing we need to preserve as far as natural resources that world relies upon.

Some posters causally mention a US nuclear attack on North Korea and flattening the country or taking out "a few cities". US will have the technology to identify North Korean preparations for a nuclear weapons launch and would have back channel communications to warn off any attack on South Korea or Japan. If ignored then use of conventional airborne weapons or at the very maximum low yield tactical nuclear weapon attack on installations and military command & communications, not civilian population centres.

I view the current threats by North Korea as yet more posturing. Hopefully neither side miscalculates their management & responses to the escalation of threat.

They can't defeat a couple of ragheads in Afghanistan, but the recreational strategists of the US can explain how to defeat China, and to wipe out every person in North Korea for good measure. Don't speak for me using the phrase 'the whole world'. I have nothing to do with people who speak about the Chinese and Koreans as Hitler did about the Jews. What's the matter with you, mate? There is an issue with North Korea. There is no issue with China at all.

Afghanistan is a politically run war. It's not that the military couldn't kick their collective asses (are you kidding me?) but that the politicians who want to be PC won't let them.

Now, bring on N. Korea and a nuke, and watch things change.

China has been N. Korea's defender and supplier for decades. China and Japan are at each others' throats as we speak so yes, they do have something to do with all this instability. They could easily get involved. A war between China and Japan isn't unthinkable right now so yes, that does have to be considered in the mix.

SE Asia is a military and economic powder keg right now. The US knows it and is moving in the heavy weaponry to The Philippines and Guam to the extent that most of its naval forces are in Asia, and numbers are still rising.

It looks as though North Korea's last nuke test may have been the last straw for China, I read in the news feeds I get from the BKP that China has fully supported the new sanctions and called for thier full implementation, if this does become a shooting or nuclear war China's unconditional support for the North may not be there. But, of course there is only one way we will know for shore, and lets hope it doesn't come to that.

A few Daisy Cutters will take out lots of DPRK ground troops. The only danger of nukes is from the North Koreans directed at Seoul.

Obama would never let the nukes fly.

Who knows. The US was ready to shoot the last one down until it was obvious it was going harmlessly out to sea.

NK claims to have ICBMs. Who knows. I doubt they have the ability to put a rocket into space, have it coast as far as they want, and then direct it to come down on target 1/2 way around the world. Again, who knows. My guess is that they have not so dependable rockets that travel in the atmosphere until they run out of fuel or break.

If I had my way, haha, every time they launched a missile, the launch site would suddenly turn into a glass parking lot. :)

Wow, that was ignorant enough, would you call Sweden a Communist dictatorship run country 10-15 years ago, although we aint a republic, we've had 40-50 years of socialist democracy, wether anyone liked socialism or not, we still were and are a democracy, by far superseeding the US even if our political system is in now way perfect. Another two countries are Denmark and Norway. I could probably mention a few more with more democracy than the "patenholder" on democracy. Different these days as Sweden have gone to full blown capitalistic society, through elections but its' still up to the people to vote however they want. I'm not condoning N Korea by any means but please, if you are going to swipe every country in one stroke, make sure you at least know what you are talking about.
