O K

So I thought maybe I could get some advice from the natives ;-)....

I have been in Dubai for 5 years now and have a good background in Customer service / catering / Hospitality and shipping (Import & Export)-all to managerial levels...

I do also have a diploma in business but feel it is time to move on as Dubai is not what it used to be,

My question is...If i come to Thailand for a visit and target companies in person rather than via the internet would it boost my chances of securing employment?

As a single male I am nnot chasing a huge salary but want to build my career and not struggle throughout the employment period and at least say...been there done that etc....

Appreciate your feedback and advice on the subject

Most jobs worth having here are gotten through networking. Many farang believe its because we are foreigners that require work permits etc etc, but the truth is that most Thai's cant find reasonable pay (by western standards) through other channels. Coming here and hitting the pavement, making friends, and attending clubs/meetings and other types of events is by far your best chance in landing a job outside of teaching other than being transferred here from a company overseas.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice...

I appreciate it...

Not much chance.

Also, if you did get a job it'll be on a local salary.

Not good advice at all, but I don't believe you are serious.

I have not worked here....am happily retired. But what I have learnt is that the general rule here is not what you know ......but Who you know.

My advice would be while you are still in Dubai, ask your acquaintances if they know someone who knows someone who works in Thailand. That would be your best foot in the door.

Good Luck.

Cheers.

Thanks for all your advice...will start background research ASAP

5 years in Dubai and it's not what it used to be ? 4 years ago, I vividly recall reading accounts of near new BMWs being left at the airport with a note on the dash apologizing to the finance company : contractors laid of from high-paying gigs and unwilling to face 'debtors jail'. Not sure where it went from there, but I'd say things weren't what they used to be virtually from the day your plane landed. A co-worker in Brisbane relocated to UAE in 2001 - I'm guessing he was one of the beneficiaries of the 'good times'.

I'd try and get on with a company that has offices there and then try to transfer there with an expat package.

5 years is not a very long experience and its probably easier to get assign here rather job hunting here especially when you do not at least have a pass degree
