Its hardly the first time...The Punks did it in the 70's and 80's, too piss people off.

Young people like to offend people, That's about it. Artist like to express themselves that's about it.

also....I think its great that the Brits don't get offended if their flag is seen on someones arse.

This is so funny. I mean the way a lot of Farangs have reacted to this story. It is just another excuse for them to feign moral indignation and outrage and bitch about Thailand and her people, just like every other day on Thai Visa.

Sieg Miaow!

You called your cat Harry ?

Well, historically, Thais were teamed up with Adolph and Tojo when they declared war on the US on December 8, 1941. So one could imagine that little historical information was retained and taught in schools. It's doubtful that Thais have a clue about the Third Reich and Hitler and national socialism or any history about the genocide.

Thais don't have a clue about much about anything outside their own narrow, self centered little world. In this case, it's surprising that McDonald's doesn't put a restraining order on the use of their image mixed in to the Hitler thing. The video is comical and silly, and this would appeal to Thais.

Thais should be taught that respect for other's religions, leaders, cultural images, endearments, historical events is "reciprocal." Thais should be taught that if they don't give and show, that others will not give and show a reciprocal respect and mindfulness of things close to Thais.

I'd say as its for the youth market and youth tend to enjoy annoying elders, the best way to minimize is to ignore it. Or better yet have a bunch of oldies start wearing the stuff.

I think you might have a point here Jingthing... Elvis Presley annoyed the hell out of my father... biggrin.png But did I stop trying to look like Elvis or wearing his clothes and listening to his music.. heck no.. it was kind of fun to listen to him mumble about it.. it's a youth thing.. whistling.gif

Actually, it begs the question, are the Thais so ignorant, they genuinely don't understand what a swastika means?

It's possible.

Most don't even seem to know what a red traffic light means. smile.png

What do you expect from a country full of over 60 million people who don't know that a world exists beyond their borders and who generally despise non-Thais? Nothing new here for those of us who live here. Let the 2 week tourists be surprised. coffee1.gif

Maybe so, but on the other side of the world (south of where you appear to come from), there is a country with 5 times our population, who have no idea about anything outside their borders... and that's a supposedly "advanced" country, so in fact I see little difference in that attitude...

I was going to add that in Thailand most of the locals don't speak English, but then I realised that was not different... haha!

People from the country you obliquely refer to would say that there is no incentive to have an "idea" about what's outside their borders when what's inside their borders constitutes the world's most flexible dynamic economy and military superpower in a world order that that very country is largely responsible for creating and protecting. Why worry about the rest of the world when your'e clearly the most important country in that very world. There's a large gap between the dregs of society and its upper echelons in the grand ol' USA. Nevertheless, the US is home to many of the most significant cultural and financial hubs in the world. The center of the art world is in the US (New York). The world's best universities are in the US. The bulk of the world's most prolific Olympians, astronauts, artists, intellectuals and scientists are either American or operate in America. Get over it. Your puerile fussiness over the fact that you and your country aren't the center of attention is really tired. I know it's fashionable in some quarters to engage in the fine art of America-bashing, but in this thread, about Thailand, It just makes you look like a jealous, petulant child.

Again

Is there a requirement for a Hitler/Nazi/Swastika thread every few weeks?

Is this 'news' - from 'daily buzz on twitter'

That video a year old, does it add anything to this forum?

How about:

Bangkok's 'Hitler Chic' Trend Riles Tourists, Israeli Envoy

and just a few weeks ago

Whats Up With The Locals Admiration For Hitler?!

My suggestion: close it, same posters with same posts . . .

Hmmm - criticizing the forum...???

Another element of any latent Hitler paraphernalia worship, which I sometimes find in Asia, and in particular India, is that of anti-colonialism. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. NC Bose led an army of sorts against the British during WWII and flirted with Germany and Japan.

The ones using images of Teletubbies and Ronald McDonald and other copyrighted images are easy to sort out as unless the owners have given permission for their use it's theft. This seems relevant.

There are problems with the swastika as it has other connections but Hitler doesn't although it's not uncommon for him to be used as a figure of fun in the west. The most important thing is for Thais to be educated as to the history behind Hitler and the Nazis. That's the lesson that needs to be learned.

I won't be surprised if I see a report on here about a big increase in Jewish tourists despite this.

Who cares ........

A lot more things Thais need to be educated about than an ethnic minority demonising a chap who died 70 years ago.

I don't know about that. IMO we should never forget our past and learn from it, or we are deemed to repeat it. I think regarding our society, history is more important then most lessons. I wish all politicians would know some and stop making the same mistakes over and over again. ANYONE with any sense of history would see the disgrace in this display. The suffering this man caused is unmeasurable. Maybe we should wear tee shirts and celebrate the murders in Thailand that killed thier loved ones. Maybe then it will sink in.

Really! REally!?! Seriously, who gives a sh*t. And don't even think about bringing me the "Thais don't know jack about Western histiry they are just naive and don't know what Hitler did to the Jews" argument. People seem to go out-of-their-way these days to get offende by some crap. The British commmited atrocities under Victoria in SA - should I be (or am I) offended by someone wearing her T-Shirt? No! I could go on, but already feel that Hitler has wasted too much time of my day (and life) already.

Lizzie van Zyl: The British incarcerated her following the refusal of her father, a Boer combatant, to surrender. 6 years old.

Posting an image taken out of context serves no purpose. The person in the image had typhoid fever. This is what people looked like when they were dying of typhoid fever. There were no antibiotics in that era and this is what happened to people who became ill. The era to which you reference also saw mentally ill people incarcerated under what we consider inhumane conditions today. Medical science was primitive and by today's standards considered inhumane. If such treatment was rendered today, you would be right to protest. However, that is not the case, and tehrein lies the BIG difference. We know what the Nazi period was and we know right from wrong when it comes to a celebration of such a period. You make a judgement using the standards of 2013. Again there is the big difference. The Nazi atrocities when judged against the standards of that period were morally and legally wrong. If you have a grudge against the English and the intervention against the Boers then discuss it within the context of that period. The conduct of the English in South Africa is in no way comparable or applicble to the behaviour of some Thais and their acceptance of Nazi accoutrements.

If one wishes to impress upon the Thais why their admiration of Nazi symbols is stupid, I suggest a simple explanation of the Nazi implementation of eugenics. Under such an application, I would expect that millions of Thais would be subject to termination either in killing centers or in slave labour camps.

Then again, when one considers the exploitation of Burmese and Cambodians in various work centers, such as the fish processing plants where children sit in dark, damp, stinking shacks peeling and deveining shrimp, one wonders if the Thai processors have not applied some of the Nazi's philosophy on the treatment of people considered subhuman. This is one of the reasons I will not purchase processed Thai shrimp. I know right from wrong and until, Thailand introduces and enforces a labour code that prevents the use of child labour in such processing plants, I will not purchase the products.

Thai don't even know what it is they are wearing can hardly blame the kids if they haven't been educated about the world outside. My niece was wearing a shirt/shorts that appeared to be made with the Union Jack and when I explained to her what it was she was very suprised. She thought it was just a trendy design. When I suggested that she make some clothing out of the Thai flag she was quite disgusted, saying you can't do that as it is disrepectful to Thailand.

"Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise."

I remember an evening at a favourite restaurant in Hua Hin a few years back... the waiter, a young chap, was wearing a t-shirt with a Swastika on it... I almost blew my top! In the meantime, I've just learned to ignore it... if they don't know what it means/represents (in the West), then they can't be criticized for wearing it...

Thailand is so increadable,I enjoy the freedom from the wests giant propaganda machine. Purchased a T shirt with the face of Osama bin Laden. You can't buy that at home.

Reading these posts just shows how ingrained your thought patterns are programned by western indoctrination. Nice to know that Thais are free.
