Are There Enough Us Veteran's In Ubon Area To Start A Vfw Or American Legion Post

Hello everyone. I have been in Ubon for 4 months. Now that my Thai wife, of 44yrs, and I have our newly built home pretty much set up, I would like to put out a feeler as to how many US Veterans reside in the Ubon area. I was in the US Air Force from 1965-1986. I retired at Seymore Johnson AFB in 86. Went to work for American Airlines as a Aircraft Maintenance Technician in 1987 and retired for that company in 2009 after a accident on the job. Then moved to Chiang Mai in 2010 and moved to Ubon in December, 2012. I was stationed at Ubon in 1966-67 as a crewchief for the 497th TFS. Went back to the states for a year and returned to Ubon in 1968-70. During that time I was again assigned to the 497th and in early 69, went to work in Job Control in the DCM building. While living in Chiang Mai, I was very active in the VFW, Veteran's of Foreign Wars. I held officer positions and worked on many committees.

I am interested in forming either a VFW Post or a American Legion Post here in the Ubon area and am wondering if there is enough interest. The VFW is more restrictive in their membership requirements, must have served in a combat zone or awarded certain medals. The American Legion is more open. If your served during a time of conflict you qualify for membership. Details can be sent on request. The VFW requires 35 charter members to start a post, 10 of which must be previous or current members. American Legion at last check needed 15 charter members to start a post.

If there is enough interest, I will setup a time and place where everyone could get together and discuss which type of post would be more likeable and benificial to the community. Please reply to this post here or at my email address: < Email removed, use PM function to contact >. Also if you have any question about VA benefits, Tricare or VA disability, you may contact me also.

Thank you,

Try contacting ACS or your Embassy warden in your area as they will know how many Americans will be living in your zone. Then get ACS to send them an email regarding the formation of a VFW Post. Good luck.

They'll only know about the ones who have registered with them - and many don't bother to register.

Good luck OP.

There is a VFW Post in Ubon Ratchatani already.

Karl W. Richter Memorial Post number 10217

Link to web site: http://www.freewebs.com/vfw10217/

That Post is located in Korat, not Ubon Ratchatani.

Do I need to apologize again?thumbsup.gif

smile.png No need. Don't know why, but when I posted, I didn't see any replies. Would understand if I had been looking thru my Chang eyes, but wasn't the case.

Thanks everyone. I am in contact with the Thailand VFW District 5 Commander and other VFW members in Thailand. I will contact the ACS and get the name of the Embassy Warden for this area and contact him/her. I believe a Veterans service organization in the area will be beneficial to this region. Are there any Expat, golf or groups that meet in the local area? I play at golf, so that might be a good starting place. Contact me, by PM, if you or anyone you know of that need assistance with the VA or Tricare. I'm here to help.

Thanks

to far,i was in air rescue(pedro) for 6 years here in thailand.did 3 tours in "nam" before comeing to thailand

You don't have to attend any of the meeting to be a member of the VFW. You could be a Charter Member of the post I am trying to organize here in Ubon. To get a Charter for a new post, it needs 35 members, of which 25 must be new VFW members. The 25 new members is the difficult part. Happynthailand, were you stationed here at Ubon when you were in Thailand? Let me know if you are interested. You or anyone can PM me with your/their contact info and if and when I/we get enough members, I will contact everyone so we can meet and get organized.

WOW!!! 600 views and not one inquiry about starting a post. Some good advice, some miss guided advice. It indicates that there are not at least 35 veterans in the surrounding area, interested in starting a Veteran's group, there are no veterans in the surrounding area, and if there are, no one is having any problems with the VA or Tricare in filing there claims or with the local hospitals. Monday I had a conference with the VFW District 5 (Thailand) Commander and Service Officers. In the coming weeks I will be contacting several of the local hospitals trying to get them to accept and self bill the VA Foreign Medical Program, FMP, for VA approved disabilities and Tricare for inpatient, extended stay in the hospital billing. Bangkok, Pattaya, Karot, Chiang Mai, Udorn and Phnom Penh have VFW posts. I feel that Ubon and the surrounding area should have their own. I would post my email address and phone number here but they won't let me do it. So PM me or reply. To do this I need your help. I am a retired veteran wanting to help veteran's.

Hi,

I'm not a American Vet, so I couldn't join up if I wanted. Any service or organization

that helps other ex-pats should be seen as a positive to our community.

Thaivisa is just 1 way to advertise your organization.

There are a few establishments in Ubon that cater to the ex-pat community.

Maybe they can be persuaded to provide some assistance.

Good Luck

Thanks mike123ca. TV is my starting point. I plan to have signs made to post is establishments that will allow them. I also want to visit some of the hospitals with a table of information and visit the Embassy Outreach program when it is in the area to meet more of the Expats and Vets in the region. If you know of anyone that might be interested, PM me and I will give you my contact info.

I would be interested in joining... USAF from 1974 to 2000.

I am based in Surin but would still like to be considered for membership.

PM if this is possible.
