European Doctor To Work In Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi Gents,

I am a 50 year old doctor currently residing and working in the European Union. I was until recently married to a Thai lady, no kids. Got divorced last year but over the years I came to like Thailand very much and I would be very happy to work here in the future. In the not so distant past, I was planning to work here and took the Thai Medical Council exams but failed for a few points (the exams is in Thai and although I can speak and understand some Thai my reading and writing abilities was not very good at the time).

My question is, now that I haven't got a Thai wife, is there a way to get a visa and work permit here in the future ? ( I am in Thailand at the moment on a month long holiday)

I can take the exams and probably get it right this time but I am wondering if at the end I could get a work permit or would I spend a lot of money, time and energy for nothing ?

Many thanks in advance

Nelson

If you pass your exams you can work in Thailand, some private hospitals have foreign doctors etc.

If you pass the exams and can find a job, you can get a non-B visa and work permit. In the mean time you can get a non-O visa based on being over 50. With 800,000 in the bank in Thailand for 2 month (and 3months for every next extension) you can get yearly extensions. You will not get a work eprmit on this, but it will allow you to study and do the exams. Once you find a job you will need to get a non-B visa from a neighbouring cuntry and apply for a work permit.

I would have thought the best starting place for OP would be to talk to someone in HR at Bumrungrad. A western trained medic with more than a passing ability in Thai would, I would have thought, be a verry attractive employment prospect.

Email to set up an appointment, formal wear.

Wow nelson, you must be spending a lot of effort learning thai....I wish i can do that.

I would contact Dr Olivier, who has his own practice and is doing well. Not sure if he will share the "secrets" but i think he would be the best source of information, even if you had to pay for his time.
