Bangkok Election commission promises 'big news' next week

Bangkok Election Commission chairman Thaweesak Tuchinda said Thursday he would invite the media to cover "big news" next Wednesday regarding the Bangkok governor election.

He said his agency would summon individuals to testify over complaints they had made related to the election. He refused to elaborate.

He also confirmed his agency had forwarded the results of probes into two cases against Bangkok governor-elect Sukhumbhand Paribatra to the national Election Committee (EC), which would have the final say on the matter.

Meanwhile, Sukhumbhand Thursday reported to the Department of Special Investigation to face charges he violated the Political Parties Act with his financial contribution to the Democrat Party five years ago.

Sukhumbhand insisted that his donation of Bt100,000 from his salary in five transactions was not unlawful as he had reported the donations to the EC, which did not find he had committed any wrongdoing.

Sukhumbhand said the DSI deemed the EC had been negligent in the matter, which had led to the charges against him.

Speaking to the media after reporting to Pol Colonel Nirand Adulsak, commander of the Special Criminal Cases Division 1, Sukhumbhand said Article 52 of the Political Parties Act was aimed at preventing money laundering, but his donations to the Democrats were transparent, so he and other Democrats were innocent of the charges.

Nirand said Sukhumbhand, Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and 46 other Democrat MPs had technically violated Article 57 because the article required that donations be made as account-payee cheques, not as direct transfers from bank accounts.

Nirand said he would summon Abhisit and the 46 other Democrat MPs to hear the charge after the current parliamentary session expires on April 20.

Nirand said the DSI received complaints against the Democrats on September 4, 2012, but it had no authority to launch an investigation until the DSI board voted on October 10 to proceed with the investigation.

But demanding "gifts" from gold shop owners by police is just fine.

Technically, somebody is being a sore LOSER.

DSI is always involved in implicating the Democrat party in something. Not once have I seen the house speaker, Somsak Kiartsuranond (PTP member) forward the names of PTP members to be investigated.

Big news?

May I assume that there is still hope for the candidate who many considered to be an outsider without a chance?

Another piece of gobbledygook from the DSI, now they are all technically innocent, have these chaps done much police work, now its time for the Dems to counter attack, sue the DSI for negligence in carrying out a investigation, fabricating facts, defamation of character, there that should put them all in a lather for the next six months.Sorry had to edit, thats the news for the following week.cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Are there going to be new elections? If so what does PTP believe there will be another outcome?

Do they think the Bankokians won't protest?

The Bangkok EC has already had a bollocking for speaking out of turn but they just keep doing it...........

Previously, questions arose about the Bangkok commission's authority when its recent announcement made it sound as if it had yellow-carded Sukhumbhand. Several observers, including a member of the national Election Commission, reacted to the announcement by saying the Bangkok EC was overstepping its jurisdiction.

Sodsri yesterday said two complaints the Bangkok EC had spoken about had yet to be submitted to the national body, but once the reports were handed in, the EC secretary-general would decide whether further investigation was needed. If more investigation is needed, the EC will set up a subcommittee to look into the complaints and submit its findings to the commissioners within 30 days after the election.......... She confirmed that only the national EC had the power to give yellow or red cards to candidates within 30 days after the election.

The DSI has decided that Democrats have committed a technical breach of the act by making donations by direct deposit.

AFAIK this will be reported to the EC, who according to the DSI have been negligent in not noticing (or ignoring) this breach, and the EC will decide their guilt/innocence and punishment.

As it seems their was no intent to conceal the donations, what is the expected outcome? IMHO some minor punishment, perhaps a warning, and a recommendation that the act be upgraded to include now standard banking practices.

How childish, " I know something that you don't but I can't tell you now ". A supposedly responsible has to get involved in nonsense is no surprise but I wonder if it will be a Chalerm like moment when he regularly says he has evidence to fully expose something, nothing more is heard and he is never called on to explain/

Quite true. Kinda like Chalerm saying he knew who the men in black were then later saying there were no men in black.

There could be ........... several more elections until the result is the one liked by Dear Leader. Stop pretending this is a democracy. Looking for the slightest irrelevant error, typo, incorrect form and blowing it out of all proportion to reality is a Thai expertise. The DSI spend their time looking for any silly slight thing that can then be trumped up to a major charge. All following the Master's instructions.

Or same as thanking Thaksin for his involvement in the South peace talks one day, then denying his involvement the next. I guess it's hard to remember the truth when telling so many lies. In fact, I doubt most would know the truth if it bit them!

Well, that's one way of making a biased reading of the situation - another more honest way would be to let the words reported speak for themselves (from the same link, though you wouldn't believe it judging by Wazas "interpretation" above)

Election Commission member Sodsri Satayathum said yesterday that the EC was likely to endorse the winner first before it finds any solid evidence against him. "The EC is worried about issuing a red or yellow card before endorsing the election result. To do so, we would need to have clear evidence, and there is little time left for a new election," she said.

The Bangkok EC rejected news reports that it had already issued a "yellow card" for Sukhumbhand, which would lead to a new election. It said it had simply recommended that the national EC nullify the election result.

"This is not true because I have no mandate to disqualify any candidates," Bangkok Election Commission chairman Pol Lt-General Thaweesak Tuchinda said, adding that only the national Election Commission had such powers.

Nothing like a "bollicking" then, just a straightforward confirmation of the actions taken by both the local and national EC. Keep on pushing Waza, I'm sure they'll be people that'll believe you.................

Quite true. Kinda like Chalerm saying he knew who the men in black were then later saying there were no men in black.

And Suthep saying he knew their addresses and was in the process of arresting them, amongst a whole raft of other irresponsible and in some cases quite sickening things. It's what some politicians do, some politicians are only good at talking, one immediately comes to mind.

Other politicians specialise in theft, one immediately comes to mind. I feel safer with the talkers.

The EC understands that it's a minor infringement, but which requires a change of the act to bring it up to date with modern banking. The current government is far to busy with rice scams, HSR, amnesty laws, etc to take care of minor matters such as this, except where they can be used to smear their opponents.

To practice for a possible re-election we just started a heavy rain here in Bangkok

This is exciting isn't it, boys and girls. I wonder what the 'Big News' can be.

Will the result of the election be allowed to stand?

Will there be another one so the Bangkok people don't get bored?

Will they reveal the electric pole that will stand in place of that plastic policeman?

I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

Telling the Bangkok EC that it doesnt have the authority to make these reconmendations sounds like a bollicking to me. Good to see you red apologists arent above twisting the truth to make invalid pionts.

Drat and double drat, foiled again, eh muttley.
