I agree that the OP is appallingly bad journalism, not sure it deserves that appellation, but like so many things there was an underlying issue in that the US took/takes the view that the honey industry in China was dumping [below cost] the product. To get around that business people tried to claim the honey did not come from China, not for qualitative issues but for duty avoidance ones.

As the old saying goes follow the money.

As to why sometimes and in most cases it's laziness, and or pressure of deadlines. Some here have linked to the Daily Mail in the UK which is (in)famous for taking stories with a grain of truth in them and conflating or expanding, usually by implication, the "real story" as they want to present it to sell their product. See line above smile.png

its all about market competition. the Chinese can produce the same product cheaper, it is not necessary of lesser quality. that scares the producer in other countries. so they come up with high import tax and some horror stories about Chinese products. and at this point the racism somewhere starts.

And some here have developed an obscure obsession with anything Chinese. i don't play the racist card because i am lacking facts. some of the uglier racist remarks have disappeared from the thread.

some people think being called a racist is more of a problem then the fact that they are one.

Cheaper because they're keeping their currency rigged and lack of regulations. That's not competition it's cheating. No wonder there economy has done so well.

A little south from Xian. Bee keeping is everywhere along the side of the road. It was part of a two month motorcycle trip I did by myself...............

Two months - that is a long time to go without food or water.

Or did you carry your own K rations? cheesy.gif

Nope. All fresh food by the side of the road. No chance for adulteration by evil Chinese factories. But thanks for worrying.... :-)

Wait now you have me thinking. Maybe my life has been shortened ?

After writing this:

Never EVER eat any consumable product from China if you want a long and healthy life

I would suggest you ought to do more of that "thinking" stuff before writing. biggrin.png

Holy cow I forgot I wrote that !! Guess time to update my will.:-) Eating Chinese products here is a choice which I chose not to eat. So if I chose to travel in China.....drum roll......I guess I would have to eat Chinese food and hope for the best. Do a bit of thinking yourself before posting ironic comments that fall flat.

lack of regulation as in the true spirit of manchester liberalism vs. protectionist policies and ultra high tariffs on imported goods?

where is the bad part if you are not a national socialist, xenophobe and opposed global free trade?

Buy from a 3rd world country and you get what you're asking for. There must be no regulations over there whatsoever.

In national socialist countries the government will decide for you where to buy from. Edited by ZhouZhou

Sorry to dissapoint you my friend but the companies in China were under no restriction to buy from the previous company i worked for or any other company. It was the same as in any other country. We went in, displayed our product along with our competition and the Chinese company made the decision. The government was not involved in any way.

yes in china.

but there are other countries that don't have that free market but lots of import restrictions for foreign goods and so in a true national socialist spirit preventing their citizen to make a free choice from who and what to buy.

that is that whole china honey story here about. there is an ultra import tax for it in the USA. so it was smuggled as honey from Mongolia or India or labeled sugar syrup on freight papers.

the part about unhealthy honey from china is pure bullxxxx.

"None of the charges allege any instances of illness or other public health consequences attributed to consumption of the honey."

Ok enough. Defend as you wish but can you please respond to my post about naming the socialist countries where the government decides for its citizens who they can buy products from? I am serious. I want to know this.

how would you call it if the us government comes up with the protectionist policies and put an ultra high import tax on Chinese honey.

thats a government control the market and the price of the products.

This is the last time I will ask. The US is not a socialist country. Either you do or do not know. Can you please respond to my post about naming the socialist countries where the government decides for its citizens who they can buy products from? I am serious. I want to know this.

protectionist policies with high import tax on foreign products = national socialist policies.

a poor brother in Chicago can not buy some reasonable priced honey from a brother in China, because the government prevents free trade and comes up with restriction for a free market.

i am that free market Manchester liberal guy. anything else is evil socialism for me.

So many things are 'make believe' in Thailand, that the Chinese felt one more 'make believe' item from Thailand hardly matters.

Farang visiting Thailand should'nt be complaining about fake honey esp. if they bought one with a bar fine.

Just look what has happened to the Chinese solar industry once the US put up anti dumping rules. Import tax protectionism happens all over the place, and the west is by no means immune to putting duities on say steel (GW Bush) for political gain. However, it gets a bit ridiculous, when the west is so open for business, and Asian countries hide behind large import duties for very little benefit, e.g. the Thai wine industry. So, quid pro quo, if the Chinese honey has antibiotics inside, the US has every right to stop the import. Anyone can moan that it is protectionism, but if there is a health reason, it's hard to get around.

What antibiotics? Those from that 10 years old daily mail article that stated it is still safe to eat Chinese honey?

that scare mongering stories about poisoned honey turned out to be not true at all but just fabricated lies.

time to call these protectionism laws that what they really are.

The US government don't want that the US citizens can buy some Chinese honey for a reasonable price. thanks god that is not my government and that i am not live there, i would feel real cheated and complain in the internet about that situation instead to defend it in blind patriotism.

we have even member reports how good and tasty Chinese honey is.

Oh and by the way, here I am traveling in China and buying honey....... It of course was delicious, as no chance for the middle man to work it over.... :-)

Well, that is just capitalism in action. Selling the cheapest shit you can get away with for the highest possible price. Americans should be applauding these asian fellows for pursuing the spirit of entrepreneurship and free trade.

Nice dig.

but unfortunately capitalism says that as soon as people find out you're selling fakes, you'll go out of business and you wont be trusted to start a new biz with anyone that knows the story.

So its in your best interest to produce the best product you can at the lowest price possible. Once consumer confidence is lost, so is your business.

as the people in HK already knows regarding the mainland products.

the only fake part of the story is that the story itself is fake, not the honey.

true capitalism means free market and free trade.

unfortunately you will not get that in the US of A. you will get high import tax on otherwise fine Chinese honey and fake stories about its quality and hateful antichina propaganda. like you would expect it in any national socialist country.
