Johpa
Geez, I failed to make the list yet again. I can claim to have sat down to lunch with three of them, but not a one has ever invited me over for dinner. Guess I need to start using deodorant. Kerryd
and487. ME, England, 5p, I sell snow. You're doing better than me ! I've been trying to sell ice to Eskimos, not doing too well ! I don't see Toxin's name on the list ? (Apparently he was on the 2004 list at 1.4 billion). In fact, the list shows only 3 people from Thailand (#214 Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi Thailand 3.2 billion, #292 Chaleo Yoovidhya Thailand 2.5 billion and #317 Dhanin Chearavanont & family Thailand 2.4 billion) I also don't see the name of the guy that used to be one of the richest men in the world (until the MicroSoft billionaires came along). The Sultan of Brunei was one of the top 3 as recently as 1998. He (nor his super rich brother) even appear on the list at all. Couldn't have lost 40 billion+ dollars that quickly, especially with the price of oil these days. While looking up the numbers, I was surprised to see that in 2003, Yasser Arafat (former terrorist leader of the PLO) had an estimated net worth of over 300 million (US) ! I guess terrorism does pay, and not just in blood, pain and misery.

jdfmail
No Sultan of Brunei, Mr Walmart, or Toxin? Can safely say this list is not very accurate. Walmart is divided into 5 after 'Mr. Walmart's' death. Taksin divided his hoolding between his family when he ran for office of PM. and no this list is notoriously not accurate as it depends highly on what people tell them about their holdings. Many lowball estimates as they don't want people to know what they are really worth. And many, such as The Donald overstate by a long short their worth. Tolley
I don't think the list is very accurate. Where are all the oil rich Arabs like the Saudi royal family?
SamuiRes
No Sultan of Brunei, Mr Walmart, or Toxin? Can safely say this list is not very accurate. Absolutely! I used to work for a certain gentleman in the Gulf who was reported 5 years ago as the second richest man in the UAE (Excluding the Royal Family). That was based on a totally wrong "assumed" valuation by someone of his real estate portfolio. You have to wonder where they get their "facts" from. I don't think the list is very accurate.Where are all the oil rich Arabs like the Saudi royal family? A lot of these lists exclude people who are wealthy as a consequence of their status. Rulers of the Arab States do not separate their wealth from that of the country and I presume that is the reason that the Sultan of Brunei and the Saudi Rulers and the UAE Royal Family are excluded. The other problem they have is actually valuing their wealth due to the secrecy surrounding it. Those people on the list from that area are included because of their business interests outside of their countries and which can be quantified to som extent. Tolley
The fact is the many of the rich royal family Arabs don't want their citizens to know how much they really have. It is not good for their health.
SamuiRes
The fact is the many of the rich royal family Arabs don't want their citizens to know how much they really have.It is not good for their health. Quite right. The other issue is that a great deal of their wealth is actually invested overseas through shell companies with the source of funds well hidden. The reason is that they are scared that the the funds could be forfeit in any serious dispute on an international scale. Look at the recent pronouncements in the Muslim world where they stated that the West would suffer economically if the rights of Muslims in the West was not protected by law. The one big ace they hold is the supply of oil - whether they would be prepared to use it is another matter - but logic is not a great asset there either. Assume they start scaling down or stopping production so that oil prices keep rising - eventually it will reach a point where certain governments will say enough is enough and the possiblity of governments going after their assets is why they are so well hidden
jackr
No Sultan of Brunei, Mr Walmart, or Toxin? Can safely say this list is not very accurate. I worked for a contracting firm under Sully's brother, Prince Jeffrey, in the mid-90s and it was reputed that Sully was richer than Mr Gates at the time - something in excess of £25B, Sterling. Today, that has been withered down to about £3B through daft business investments and extravagant spending mainly by Jeff. Heng
The list is naturally going to be heavier in terms of those whose wealth is primarily in joint stock/public companies and those who choose not to hide their wealth. It's obviously not going to include those whose holdings are private, scattered across large extended families, prefer to keep a low profile, and finally those whose wealth is/was criminally acquired, etc.

tjo o tjim
Interesting to look at the distribution of places and the industries. I imagine the US is over-reported based on the nature of finances, similar for Hong Kong, and many other areas are grossly under-reported for political reasons. (Only two people listed for China, but 16 from India; over 10% of the people in California!)
Thaiquila
Well, all I can say, is I've been poor and I've been poor, and RICH is better! I just found out about that Mexican guy the other day. Third in the world, pretty impressive. He has up till now kept a very low profile, but because of a possibly big political change to the left that is happening there, he is being alot more public and doing good works (spending some of his money).
