2,000 houses in Chiang Rai & Chiang Mai damaged by summer storm

BANGKOK, 1 April 2013 (NNT) - Over 2,000 houses have been damaged by a summer storm, described by locals in Chiang Rai as the biggest in five decades.

Deputy Governor of Chiang Rai province Piphat Ekphaphan revealed that 1,500 houses in eight districts of Chiang Rai province had reportedly been damaged by the summer storm. Locals in Mae Lao district of Chiang Rai Province described the summer storm as the "biggest in 50 years".

Provincial authorities has already asked the military to send in troops to help repair the damaged houses.

Meanwhile, in the nearby Fang district of Chiang Mai Province, five hundred more homes, as well as farm produce, were also reported to have been damaged in the area. As a temporary relief measure, local authorities have distributed roofing tiles to affected locals so that they could repair their homes.

On Sunday morning, I saw two truckloads of young military personnel arrive to help out at a nearby village that was hard hit by the storm, which considering the swath of destruction cut from east to west south of the city, was in my opinion much more like a tornado. 10/10 to the authorities on the prompt response to this one!

Had a shopping trip to Chiang Rai today. Just south of the white temple noticed tree damage. There were crews still removing branches. About 500 metres south of the traffic lights there were a number of cement power poles that had fallen over. Repairs were still being completed on our return journey this afternoon. North bound traffic were directed into the south bound lane for a km. Some businesses had damage to their roofs. Must have been a huge storm to cause that amount of damage

This is what I posted in Chiang Rai weather thread yesterday.
