BANGKOK, April 5 – Thailand’s power reserves will rise by 1,660 megawatts (MW) today and 1,400 MW on April 9-10 thanks to reduced consumption in the industrial sector.

The natural gas platform in Myanmar which supplies electricity to Thailand is closed for maintenance on April 5-14, prompting the Energy Ministry to urge people to resort to energy-saving measures to prevent power outage or brownout.

Energy Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal said the industrial sector has reduced electricity consumption by 807 MW and industrial estates by 127 MW.

The normal supply of natural gas to Thailand from the Yadana platform, operated by Total Co, should resume at 2 pm on April 14.

Mr Pongsak said the government will support the construction of hydro power and coal power plants in the long run despite protests by Thai people.

An alternative is to set up the plants in neighbouring countries but there is risk of international conflicts, he said, adding that the Energy Regulatory Commission was instructed to study measures to reduce energy consumption and incentives for the wider public to install localised solar energy systems.

Sutat Patmasiriwat, governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), said today’s energy consumption could be reduced to 25,600 MW from the original forecast at 26,600 MW, based on an assumption of maximum temperature at 40 degrees Celsius.

The highest demand for energy will be 25,250 MW on April 9 and 25,950 MW on April 10, he said.

Payungsak Chartsuthipol, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries IFTI), said several operators halted production today to help save energy and shifted to machinery maintenance operations while those continuing to operate will slow down their production until 10 pm.

He said the FTI was requested to implement the energy-saving measure only today. (MCOT online news)

Dual fuel peekers could be an interm solution to natural gas interruptions.

Improving the infrastructure might help a bit, too.

Intresting comment.!!

Mr Pongsat said the Government will support the construction of hydro and coal power in the long run despite the protests by Thai people.

It then begs the question as to who he thinks he is representing and who pays his salary.
