BELGRADE, SERBIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least thirteen people were shot dead after a gunman went on a shooting spree in a Serbian village, local media reported Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the village of Velika Ivanca, located south of Belgrade, the country's capital, according to Serbian Police Director Milorad Veljovic, who spoke with B92, a local TV and radio broadcaster.

The gunman was identified as Ljubisa Bogdanovic, 60, who with a licensed CZ-88 handgun allegedly killed six men, six women, and a two-year-old child while they were sleeping.

The thirteen fatal victims were Bogdanovic's relatives and lived in nearby houses. As police approached the site of the attack, Bogdanovic tried to shoot and kill his wife and himself with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Nonetheless, both survived and the gunman is reported in critical condition.

Bogdanovic was a veteran of the Croatian war in 1991. Following the violent incident, the government of Serbia declared Wednesday as a day of mourning.

In 2007, a gunman killed nine people at a village in eastern Serbia. However, similar incidents are not common in the country.
