Motorbike Tours Around Cm - Anyone Interested?

I am looking for people interested in going on motorbike trips around Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Song.. wherever really.

Im not looking for a chopper/harley/rough men in leathers type club lol. Just people with any kind of motorbike who like riding around stopping at little villiages for a beer, maybe exploring a bit off-road (ive got a dirt bike) or even camping. Im not into riding fast, binge drinking, fighting or doing crazy stuff

There was a club on meetup.com but its closed. Just wondering if there is anything established and free/low cost. Im not looking for guided tours.

Our major pastime here in CM is sport / off-road riding and some camping. We don't race - we cruise.

The riding 'season' for us begins with winter, in Nov. until like mid-March. Right now is way too hot and dirty for riding.

If you are in town in Nov. post again to re-connect. Good Luck in the meantime.

Cheers

Post up on the RideAsia dot net forum, and I'll bet you'll find a riding buddy or two. Have you followed Captain Slash (dot com)?

Not enough people camp around the areas mentioned, heck last summer I had a couple full camping set ups and had to give them away as no one was buying.

Holy cow, for now I'm living close to the Arctic circle and my riding season is longer than yours. What do I miss most about northern Thailand; year round ridding! laugh.png

If you are willing to wake up early and set off while it is still dark you can get some very good riding in during the hot season. The sunrise is spectacular from up in the hills, less than one hour out of town. It is also important, once the sun is up, to cover your skin, so wear long sleeves and wrap a pakama, Thai sarong, around your neck.

I just finished my first short solo trip to photograph some things around Chiang Dao. It is hot, but the mornings and evenings are comfortable, and chances of being rained out are nil. Ride early and late, and cover up.

The back country is dusty, but, once again, there's an upside: no need to pick your way through muddy dirt roads. Even on my Nouvo, it was easy to negotiate the smallest tracks through the fields. A quick wash job was all I needed when I returned home.

There is a bunch of mostly Dutch guys go riding 3rd Sunday of the month. Social ride to anywhere starting from near Mae Rim - usually 4-6 hrs. PM me if you are interested and I'll try to meet up for next ride. (I can't explain directions - I just know where to go).

After the winter solstice you certainly do have longer riding days... but,not so nice picking mosquitoes and horse flies out of your teethbiggrin.png

I can and do ride all year-round in CM,aside from the summer months we spend on Vancouver Island. The so-called 'riding-season' is simply the best time of the year to be out on the highways and back roads of the North... although Iam not talking about 'scooter-riding'.

Um, grew up ridding everywhere on Van Isle, we wear helmets with visors here in BC, therefore no bugs. Enjoyed touring (on road) during the raining season, managing week long trips from June to August. Many years of ridding during the rainy season, (

- as an Islander HaleySabai, you'd likely be able to name the band in the video) and it certainly beats the endless times in the BC mountains riding home nearly hypothermic due to dropping temps and steady rain. Mind you we did get bugs in face touring around BC in the same summers driving the convertible around thumbsup.gif

BuffloRescue, visit the Chiang Rai Saddle bag shops also, they organize a nice, social group ride once a month.

I thought you were talking much further north than Van.Island, like beyond the Territories and where the bugs are a serious menace.

Nice vid, cool tunes...but I'm not an "islander",born & raised on the flatlands...Alberta. I cashed-out of 'boom-town' 7yrs ago and now live in CM. My wife and I with our 4yr.old daughter come to Canada each year to run a rather robust cash'n carry business in the 'Land of Milk 'n Honey from June to end of Aug. We spend May and Sept. on the Island before coming back to CM in early Oct.

Some years back I was riding near Krabi and got caught in numerous downpours, that warm, sweet rain just brought a smile to my face.

I ride a Road King so racing is out but so is 90 kph or less unless the roads call for it which is quite often Open roads I cruise 100-110. Don't wear leathers and I don't like to fight. My wife rides with me most times so we like to tour. Camping is not out of the question but don't have the gear as yet. I have been up your way a few times takes me 1 1/2 days to get there.

If you think I am your type of rider PM me. We usually ride alone but some company would be good sometime.

I was in CM untill mid March. There seemed to be a sudden hot spell and I found it hard to acclimatise but also found the out early and back early solution worked. Sitting here in England looking at more rain with a stinking cold I wish I had stayed longer, probably will next winter.

As another poster suggested, try Rideasia and drop into 'Riders Corner' some time.

Riding a motor bikes in this part of the country is something I envy and want to do. I wish I can join you. For my wife, drinking with my friend in the moobaan is dangerous! Hey, everything is dangerous - when I'm out of her sight!

Anyway, I will try to get a bike for myself in the near future and join in!
