Why use a paid ($$$$ per dy/week/month) vpn when there are so many other free solutions? Heck even the free vpns like http://websitevpn.com/ for the UK and US allow for streaming. and nicely too.

You obviously have no clue about the difference between a tunneller and a VPN and why a paid VPN provider is better than a free one.

Let me try to explain:

1 - A tunneler is only for selected sites and is not able to unblock every website (Porn sites etc). A VPN allows you to unblock all sites wherever they are. Furthermore a VPN is able to redirect traffic to another server than the one of your ISP. Private Torrents on True have a throughput of max 500KBs (throttling) while when I connect my VPN to Singapore I get easily 1.5 - 1.6 MBs (True 16Mb).

So a VPN has a much wider application than a tunneller.

2 - A free VPN like the one you mentioned is most likely overloaded (now or in the near future) with cheap charlies and has only 2 servers. A paid VPN provider has many locations (Hidemyass about 20,000).Furthermore the free VPN has only the PPTP protocol, while paid ones also support OpenVPN which is easier to setup and easier to switch locations.

I gladly pay $3 per month to SlickVPN.

I've been using IB (Invisible Browsing) VPN for some months, mainly because they had a good U.S.-only package that costs about $38-a-year, and had server locations in the U.S. cities I wanted/needed. I started out getting 2-3 Mbps during the mornings and days local times, but then it would fall to 700 Kbps to 1+ Mbps in the evenings here, when local internet congestions is at its peak.

But lately, for reasons I couldn't identify, my IB-VPN speeds to the exact same connections --and using the same True cable 15 Mbps plan in BKK -- seemed to be regularly down to the 300 to 600 Kbps range throughout the days and nights -- which isn't fast enough for the video streaming I need to receive. I thought it might have been an issue with True and their international throttling and all the current political troubles.

But to check and see if I could resolve my problems, earlier this week I added a paid trial subscription to the (oddly named) Hide My Ass (HMA) service, which happened to also have a server in the southwest U.S. city I need as my primary server location. I tried their one-month plan for $11.52, although their year plan is $79 -- about double the price of the year's subscription to the U.S. plan with IB-VPN.

But what I immediately discovered was, with HMA, my VPN connections to my primary southwest U.S. city immediately went to averages of 2-3 Mbps in the mornings and daytimes, and usually 1.5 Mbps to 2 Mbps even in the evenings/nights here local time -- which is plenty fast for my streaming needs. And that's NOT even connecting to Los Angeles, which usually is among the fastest U.S. connections from Thailand.

The other difference between the two is HMA basically has one plan and service, which provides access to ALL of their servers in any/all of their countries, admittedly, most of which I don't have need for or use. But it's nice to have access to UK and other country servers when the need arises. The U.S.-only plan with IBVPN was a bargain and would have covered my needs, if their speeds hadn't seemingly taken a sudden drop a month or two ago.

The consistent 1.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps PPTP connections I'm getting now with HMA to the U.S. are among the best I've seen of any proxy or VPN connection to the U.S. And, as pointed out above, the VPN-PPTP service works for everything. I don't have to worry about whether or not Netflix or Amazon Prime or Hulu or etc etc etc is or isn't supported by one of the DNS redirecting services.

The VPN services also come in handing for keeping a consistent home-country and even city IP address for when doing one's home country online banking or brokerage transactions -- which can avoid some potential pitfalls as the financial companies get increasingly conscious about online security and perceived threats from log-ins done from outside countries.

Hmm .. just tried my Chrome/Hola (was running and set on Thailand). Changed to US, TV went AWOL! Reset to Thailand, back came the TV home page, then the [back] button dropped me right back to where I had been reading.

VPN absolutely - if only because I can use it on multiple devices instead of being stuck with some plug in I can only use on one machine. I have an ipad, laptop, desktop and android phone, use the same account with them all. Not to spam or anything but i use uktvaccess.com - someone else on this forum recommended it a couple of years back and i think it's worth sharing. Of course, cheap charlies will alwyas look for what's 'free', but most of us have learned the hard way nothing is free in this world.

yes agreed. the problem with many users is that they do not know they are paying a higher price for "free" vpn or bypass. Each time you connect via these free softwares, you are passing information to them. This means your password, emails, bank details, user names, etc. 1 successful hack, and it can cost you.

Its better to pay for a reputable vpn, i mean if you care, so that you dont risk those things. For starters, you can try looking at hma, they have free trial and so far it works for me so im sticking.

You can set up VPN's manually on a PC, but that does take a bit of knowledge.

However, these days, most decent VPN providers offer their own customized Windows install programs. Download and install, then just run their program off your PC, enter in your VPN account user ID and password, and click connect. Not too difficult, right?

Same thing with Android apps from Google Play or IOS apps from ITunes for the various bigger VPN providers.

It depends a bit on what nationality you are, and what country/address you have your bank cards in.

But a VPN like HMA that provides a U.S. IP address will go along way toward your goal.

Still rate my vpn uktvaccess.com for security and efficiency. I still can't believe how many people still looking for a free lunch.

It's not free but it is very cheap and has a lengthy free trial, I consider it worth paying since it seems to support more services than the free ones and has been very reliable.

For me, services I use are BBC, 4OD, ITV player, Live BBC1/2/3 ITV 1/2/3 etc C4 all via the Filmon Plex plugin, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, NOW TV (have a hacked 500 baht nowtv box running plex so have in the past used their subscriptions for stuff like Sky Atlantic, Sky Movies, Sky Sports but don't maintain it cos it's not worth it for me). One really handy feature is per device config, you can be streaming different netflix regions to different devices simultaneously, for example.

Separately I also have ILIKEHD installed on a TOT box but it's pretty much solely for the UK football, I just pay 30 baht for a 2 hr slot when I want it. In fact I tend to plug the laptop in via HDMI because the android app is buggy. This service also includes another way of getting live UK tv, no catchup though.

I have unotelly DNS set up on the router so 2 TVs, 3 android boxes, consoles, laptops, iphones/ipads etc all work without thinking about it, and non TV related traffic is just deferred to Google DNS so no impact on normal traffic, unlike with a VPN.
