Hi there,

I plan getting from Chiang Mai to Kanchanaburi. Is there any way I can do it without entering Bangkok?

I've heard about the direct Sombat Tour's bus to Hua Hin. Do any of you know what exact route does it take? Maybe I could hop of at Suphan Buri or Nakhon Patom...

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Nakon Sawan have buses to Kanchanaburi as do Supanburi, and Nakon Patom, also Mon Chit bus terminal in Bangkok. I do not know the Sombat tours coach to Hua Hin goes through Nakon Sawan .

Don't think you'll get there direct, but you could always get off at Ayuthaya and take a minibus from one of the guesthouses, such as Tony's Place... or take Sombat to Nakhon Patom and bus (every 20mins or so) from there. The latter would probably be easier, cheaper and faster.

Connecting at Mor Chit terminal will be fastest, actually. Buses get in seriously early in the morning so traffic is not an issue, and the same terminal has many buses to Kanchanaburi.

Alternatively, check if Sombat tour still run a bus to Nakhon Pathom. You could connect from there too. (But I would still do Mor Chit; it's the most obvious place to connect as you have the most flexibility in departure times both here in Chiang Mai and then overthere for the Kanchanaburi bus)

Yes, it should be quicker, although doesn't Sombat's nice bus go via Suphanburi on that quiet bypass at night? Personally find Mochit a bit of a cattle market (not that I've been there donkey's years) and Nakhon Pathom is sort of interesting. You also have the option of taking the semi-pleasant, third class train to Kan for peanuts for that last little stretch, though it doesn't run often. The bus and train station are not far apart and you get to walk past that huge stupa.
