Boater
Lower-end hotels on Samui Island may feel annoyed by the baht's appreciation because they cannot raise their room rates, though fancier hotels will charge more. "I hope the uptrend in the baht will not keep going on too long," Tanongsak Somwong, president of the Tourism Association of Koh Samui, said yesterday. Four- and five-star hotels plan to hike rates by 8-12 per cent this year to cover rising costs, mainly driven by the higher minimum wage. That means the resort island may lose its competitiveness in the market, he said. The four- and five-star hotels are selling rooms for Bt4,500-Bt7,500, while tourists are facing less purchasing power after their currencies are converted into baht. Room rates on the island have remained flat for several years because operators worry about problems if they raise rates at a time when the United States and Europe are in financial trouble, resulting in fewer tourist arrivals. The island has a stock of 16,000-18,000 guest rooms. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Baht-may-deter-rise-in-Samui-room-rates-30204563.html

As for the 300bt minimum wage do I feel sorry for the hotels No. When they charge more than 5000bt a room if they are not making money shut up and get out. churchill
Supply and Demand One can always get discounts in the low season ... And of course hotels manage their rates for maximum occupancy and profits .. Seems Samui is busy for now , so I would not expect lower rates

livinthailandos
Different topic but Different hotel properties adjusted ok others not so much. Main issue was not the increase at least for quite a few of us. Its the issue of populist policies. Just waiting for issue to come up and see when thai government will announce to raise minimum wage to 350 baht or 400 baht next year. Most hotels in Europe are the same rate now as samui or cheaper, yet they have to pay the daily min wage per hour to employees ! Sent from my iPhone using ThaiVisa app minimum wage is far too low,and as you say cannot be blamed. In the west people on low wages usually have the oppotunity to work a 2nd job to make up extra income. In thailand this is not possible to do because of the daily hours workers have to work(i.e. 10-12 hours per day)often only having 1 day off a week or every two weeks.Mind you it would be difficult to find a thai wanting to work 2 jobs anyway and from what i have seen of restaurant employees they tend not to be very productive.Apologies if my reply is slightly off topic. Tropicalevo
Just for your info, the rate for Samui is 240 baht/day, Hey Eric Great info. unfortunately all of the Thais on the island (and probably elsewhere as well) all believe what is on the Television. maccaroni man
Lets not forget that many of the employees work for a lower hr min wage and get many perks such as food room and bonus these bonus can be worth 6 months wage or more. This type of profit sharing IMO is a good thing
pokerspiv
If increasing the minimum wage helps poor people so much, I wonder why the Thai government doesn't just increase it to 10,000 baht a day and solve everyone's problems?
