The visa is cheap as mentioned but the exstensions for 30 days cost 1900 baht, still OK but I think They have it backwords

Agreed but please note that the Lao Embassy will ONLY accept Thai baht, no local money and no $$

Who has what backwards? Should in your opinion the Thai consulate, ie the MFA, charge more for the visa and Thai immigration charge less for the extension of stay?
