i've just been up in Essan (Phetchabun, ok that's north, but close to Essan) for a bit and of course everyone speaks Lao to me. i understand the local language quite well because that's all my wife and daughter speak at home so i understand them just fine but i usually reply in Thai because I feel weird speaking Lao unless i'm specifically doing it for a joke. i feel a bit like i'm taking the piss when i speak the local language, like a Thai coming up to me and saying 'Aye up lad!'

what do you Essan locals think about this? do you speak Thai or local language in your villages?

I started speaking Thai but it automatically morphs into issan. Depends who I am talking to, I find most of the locals understand Thai except the older generation.
