Congratulations. Cute baby.

Many Thai people believe that gloves are necessary to stop babies scratching their own eyes out!

In fact, touch is one of the 5 senses so all they are doing is depriving their babies of a chance to learn more about the world. It is akin to blind-folding them to stop them seeing the world, or using ear plugs to stop them hearing, etc. So, better get those gloves off as soon as possible.

Umm, that's standard procedure at western hospitals too. And yes they can inadvertently poke their eyes.

Anyway, he's got more hair on his head than some people.

One good thing about being a farmer is that the delightful aroma of a diaper won't bother you. thumbsup.gif

I've seen babies with injuries to their faces and cheeks from finger nails marks - scratching. No so much about poking their own eyes.

I'm not sure what is a "western" hospital but that's another debatable topic.

Quote:

Newborns and infants have very little control over their hands, so at

this stage it's common for them to accidentally scratch themselves,

particularly in the face, says David Geller, a pediatrician in Bedford,

Massachusetts.

But could it be dangerous? "A baby could hurt his

cornea," says Geller, "but when the hand gets near the face, there's a

reflex for the eye to blink. That's why I rarely see any problems with

this in my office."

Scratches elsewhere almost always heal without

leaving a mark. If a scratch becomes infected, which is rare, consult

your baby's doctor. The doctor may recommend an over-the-counter

antibiotic ointment.

While some parents put mittens on their

baby's hands to prevent scratches, Geller doesn't recommend it. "Babies

need to feel and explore things with their fingers," he says. "It's an

important developmental process."

He does advise keeping your baby's nails short,

either by clipping them or using an emery board. Babies are wiggly and

their fingers are tiny, so wait until they're asleep or distracted with

nursing or their bottle before attempting a manicure. "Keep some

clippers in your car's glove compartment," suggests Geller. "When your

baby's asleep in his car seat, you can seize the opportunity and do a

quick trim."

Are those white wrist strings a 'blessing' ?

.

Not sure if you could call them a blessing, they were given to him by Mother,Grandmother and Great Aunt for protection and good luck.
