Experts: Child Tablet may be gateway to online gambling

Bangkok, 7 May 2013, (NNT) Academics have urged government agencies to come up with policies to prevent students from falling victim to online gambling.

Mr. Paisan Limsatit (ไพศาล ลิ้มสถิต), an academic from Health Laws and Ethics Center ,Thammasat University, stated during a meeting on gambling prevention among youths, that, according to records, 16.7 million people regularly visit online casino related websites; more than half of that figure are youths aged between 15-19 year-old.

Mr. Paisan said even though the activities of the youngsters mainly involve listening to streaming music, watching online VDO, using social network, or emails, the word 'casino' appears in 1,548 items from app store search engines.

App store can easily be accessed from any tablet connected to the internet.

He urged the government and other related agencies to establish clear policies regarding online gambling, showing concerns that children can access these online casino effortlessly via the tablets from the government's One Child One Tablet scheme.

These things are supposed to be given to patom 1 students not 15 to 19 year olds.

The kids are far more likely to be playing games than gambling, as I see the kids here who have them (not Govt issue) doing.

Anyway they don't need tablets they can do all that from their mobile phones.

What are the odds of getting a working internet connection? unsure.png

I have True Hi Speed internet and it's far from reliable especially over a weekend and whenever there's a public holiday

As far as Ihave seen, the moment a kid (in any country) gets hold of a tab it is instantly used to play games. Cannot see how playing these stupid games is doing any kid any good. Have recently read about a 4 yo girl in the UK who had to be treated for "computer game addiction" by a shrink. Very sad to see.

OMB! Who would have thought that?!? Tablets are the gateway to anything, good and bad.... Deal with it, or ban the tablets (good luck with that cheesy.gif )

Just wait till they trace an anti-government comment back to a school issued tablet. The whole program will be ended and they'll all be rounded up and crushed. The tablets won't fare much better either.

Tablets are great for enabling people to consume media and other content - not so easy to create content.

Same the world over, the tablet is the replacement for the TV set, interactive yes but just a means of delivering programme and advertising. With the bidirectional nature of a tablet the advertising can be more targeted to location and demographic viewer.

The only education element is educating how to be a better consumer.

For those that can not gamble with credit cards etc the entry level is the free game of Irritated Avions etc but entice players to buy extra levels/credits/features with real money, no credit card is not an issue as a model to pay on-line via a 7-11 is not hard to create.

Bait and sell-up, it will happen be assured.

Tablets are a gateway to gambling, but the tablet isn't the problem.

The tablets are also a gateway to google, and wikipedia... i.e. They're a gateway to lots of things on the internet, but saying the tablet is the problem isn't the answer.

Blaming tablets as a gateway to gambling is about as sensible as blaming money as a gateway to gambling. After all, without money being involved, who would gamble? In fact, money is a far more essential part of the gambling process than the tablets are, so let's ban money... - the true gateway to gambling.

Do these people not realise how dumb their statements are?

especially in Thailand is wikipedia the most visited web site...hunger for knowledge 555

If this or previous governments had listened to expert warnings in the past in regard to water/flood contol, road safety education, inflation, health /medical treatment, populist programs, natural resources, corrution, etc this would be the utopia many are looking for.

Just think of the reduced budget that would be required if Thailand followed the thinking that every dollar spent on preparing for the diseaster, saves 4 dollars being spent, after its happening.

The older students are getting tablets this year. M1 students are in this prime group for gambling. The more tech savy teens will get past any perfunctory safeguard put on the tablets.

Look elsewhere.

As the customer, demand more of your daughter's school.

Not all schools would tolerate that behavior.

Break room, isn't that where they spend their break time ?

I agree, they should be tied up during their break. ( whistling.gif this is a sarcasm emoticon )
