Insurgent suspect shot dead in Narathiwat raid
The Nation

NARATHIWAT: -- An alleged insurgent was shot dead and a soldier was injured in a gunfight in Narathiwat's Rusoh district early yesterday morning, while four closed-circuit TV cameras were torched in Yala's Raman district in a separate incident.

The Internal Security Operation Command's Division 4 Special Operations chief Colonel Thanit Saengchan said yesterday he led a group of 60 soldiers to inspect a house in Ban Poo village in Tambon Rusoh in Narathiwat's Rusoh district, after a tip that a group of insurgents stayed there.

While inspecting the house, the suspected insurgents fired at the soldiers, triggering a gunfight that lasted 10 minutes. The insurgents fled into the forest before firing upon the soldiers again, injuring Sub-Lieutenant Suksan Chandhorn in the chest.

After the gunfight, Yamalee Hayeebaga, 45, was found shot dead, with bullet wounds to his body and head. A .38 handgun was found near his body. Yamalee was a member of the RKK insurgents led by Isama-ae Rayalong. Yamalee had reportedly trained insurgents and was allegedly involved in the killing of Masalee Zorlama, an employer who participated in an urgent-employment project in the region, on April 11, 2008.

In Yala, an unidentified group of people set fire to closed-circuit TV cameras installed in front of Ba Ngoy School in Tambon Ban Ba Ngoy in Yala's Raman district.

The unidentified suspects also torched CCTV cameras in other areas including Moo 1 Tambon Kortorteura and Tambon Asong.

Meanwhile, Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre secretary-general Pol Colonel Tawee Sodsong, Pattani Governor Pramook Lamul and special commander Maj-General Tawat Sukpran convened to seek a resolution to curb violence in the area.
