Hi All,

My school has just had a teacher quit because they had some problems getting a Non Immigrant "B" visa. So my school needs to get a new western teacher, ideally one who could start on the 3rd of June (Or earlier).

Details:

- 35,000 THB per month, paid in cash on the last working day of the month

- Salary is paid for 11 months of the year (No salary in April)

-Upto 5000 THB contribution from the school each year towards your Non Immigrant B + Work permit

-16 - 18 periods of teaching per week (Looks like 16 this term, with 2x "office hours" for Thai teachers to get assistance with their English)

-Contract runs until the 30th of April 2014

-You would be teaching a mixture of Thai section and English program classes from M1 - M6. Some of the English program classes may be teaching science (The teacher who left was going to teach science to M1 - M3 for 2 periods a week)

-The school is in Kaset Wisai, RoiEt (approximately 50km from RoiEt, and 70km from Surin), in the main town of the amphur (Small-medium sized town, with 2x 7/11s and another under construction lol)

-A BSc or BEng would be a MAJOR advantage for this role. If you were able to teach senior physics / chemistry / biology or maths to the students, then the school would be very interested in your application. As at present, we don't have qualified Science/Maths teachers, although the school will be content with an English teacher, so long as they are willing to teach junior science (you have a text book so it's relatively easy)

-English program classes have Air Con, Thai section classes don't, so a rough estimate would be 50% of your classes will have air con. Our office also has a/c.

The upsides of working here:

- Salary is as good or better than the rest of Isaan, especially as after your first year you'll likely be bumped up to 36,000THB.

- Working environment is very relaxed, you need to sign in in the morning, but not the afternoon, plus you are able to leave the school between classes.

- No requirement to submit lesson plans or similar, you have a lot of freedom in what you want to teach.

- During the school holidays in October, you'll have 2-3 weeks off. Likewise, we usually finish up in mid-late March (Last 2 years we've had the last week of March off).

- 3x other western teachers at the school and 2x Chinese teachers, so you won't be the only westerner at the school.

- We will assist you with finding a house/apartment, and motorcycle if needed. There potentially may be a free school house available, but I'm not sure on that (It's nice by Thai style, but not sure if you'd find it ideal unless you were used to living Thai style).

- Lots of warm fuzzies as the students are great kids, and being such a small town, you'll see them around town all the time.

- RoiEt is in the centre of Isaan, so it's a 1h bus ride to RoiEt, and from there you can easily get to most provinces in Isaan on the weekends etc. There are also direct buses from Kaset Wisai to Mukdaharn, Surin, Korat/Nakon Ratchasima and Bangkok.

The downsides of working here:

- This is a small town, and so you can't really "go out" to a bar here. As the bars are all karaoke bars filled with ladies of ill repute, so not really an appropriate place for a teacher to be seen. However you can order a beer at a restaurant, or buy one from 7/11 and drink it at home without any problems of course.

-As it's a small town in the countryside, you probably need to either speak at least a little bit of Thai (Or Isaan), or alternatively be willing to learn, in order to survive (Unless you really enjoy eating at 7/11 lol)

- Other than the teachers at our school, there aren't many westerners here, at least not that I know.

Questions + Applicantions:

I've got to pop back to class, if there are any important questions which you'd like to ask regarding the job, then please feel free to pm me, or post in this thread (Then everyone can see the answer so I don't need to answer it 200 times lol).

Also if you would like to apply, then please send me your CV + contact e-mail + contact phone number. I'll then probably review CVs, and will submit the best ones to my boss to review. There are already a couple of applicants, however the school wants to try and get the best applicants possible and ideally applicants who are available early.

Great info here. All job adverts should be like this. Kudos, SlyAnimal.

Haha well I'm not often known as a man of few words.

Hopefully we can find a good teacher, as I was really stoaked when I saw we'd gone down to 16 periods a week this term (because of the 4th teacher who was starting with us, usually it has been 18 when there were only 3 western teachers). If we can't find a good 4th teacher, I might have to pickup those extra 2 hours again lol.

Seems like not as much interest as I thought there would be in the teachers forum (haha maybe I provided too much information, and so no one needs to ask any questions lol), so I'm going to move this to the Isaan forum instead.

PM me if you're interesting in applying :)

Nothing personal, but the less people that are interested in 35k jobs, the better off we will all be.

How about Bar managers working in Pattaya for 25K??

At least this is good experience and something positive to put on a CV thus improving your future prospects.

11 month contracts are distasteful as well. What are people supposed to do for one month of the year. Schools want good, reliable, settled teachers, then refuse to pay them for one month every year. What should be time for them to rest and relax and recharge for the coming year has to be spent worrying about money because they're left with no income.

Ahhh so Thailand would be much better if the only teaching jobs available for foreigners in Thailand, were at international schools and the hi-so schools in Bangkok.

35k per month is significantly better than the average salaries available for teaching jobs in Thailand. 30k per month is usually considered a pretty decent deal for an Isaan school.

As far as teaching jobs go in Isaan, this is a very competitive package. The 1 month where you don't receive is a little bit of a negative, but with many schools requiring foreign teachers to work over the summer, it allows for people to have a month off work, without needing to return for summer school or to sign in every day during the holidays (As some schools do). And the 12 month salary still works out to 32,000, which is very competitive, especially in Isaan.

Actually, a lot of teachers would be better off taking a job that pays 35k than staying at their current job earning less than 35k. I agree that if teachers didn't take these jobs schools might start paying more. Maybe they would employ non native speakers, as so often happens all over Thailand for less still.

I'm not interested in the teaching job but the karaoke scene sounds like fun.

Job sounds great to me! Unfortunately I'm not a qualified teacher, that would be an issue I'd assume?

If by not qualified, you mean you don't hold a teaching licence in your own country, then no this wouldn't hold you back.

If by not qualified, you mean you've never taught before, then this doesn't necessarily hold you back, although obviously puts you on the back foot compared to an applicant who applies with extensive teaching experience.

The school will be looking for the best applicants, and half of teaching English as a foreign language, is about your personality and general work ethics, rather than previously learnt knowledge. Also a big factor for our school, is your ability to work with our other staff, and adapt to a rural lifestyle, as these are important for retaining teachers over the long term.

And sorry Yoslim, unfortunately you do need to be a native English speaker. The only exception to this, would be if you had a Bachelors degree related to Science, Maths or Engineering, as I know the school would consider a non native speaker for teaching Science and Maths.

As somebody with some experience of Isaan Karaoke bars, I'd say that 32 K per month is going to leave you struggling even to pay the drinks bill.

I am surprised by some of the responses. The job sounds great to me and the salary attractive in Isaan. Good luck SlyAnimal, hope you find the right person. With tongue in cheek admittedly, I find "ONLY 18 hours FOR A WHOLE WEEK, AND 35k A MONTH" very attractive.

A minor one. Under 60 with a degree and you can get a three period to gain the qualification while you teach.
