BMA gearing up for rainy season

BANGKOK, 20 May 2013 (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is dredging canals and reducing the water levels in various “monkey-cheek” water retention areas in preparation for the rainy season this year.

Deputy Governor of Bangkok Amorn Kitchawengkul said on Monday that the Department of Drainage and Sewerage was sending its mobile units to install water pumps on main roads and dredge canals and sewers of a combined length of 6,090 kilometers. The dredging work is expected to finish in July this year. In the meantime, Mr Amorn added that the department was also decreasing the water volumes in monkey-cheek reservoirs to have enough storage space for the rainfall this year.

The BMA has forecast that this year’s rainfall will be no less than last year’s and, with a precipitation rate of 60 millimeters per hour, it will take no more than three hours to drain the water after the rain stops.

Pattani to host peace-building bike fair

PATTANI, 20 May 2013 (NNT) – The southern border province of Pattani will organize the Pattani Peace Bikes 2013 at the end of this month as another peace-building event aimed at boosting local tourism and relieving public worries about the unrest situation.

Pattani Governor Pramuk Lamul said that due to the success of past events, which include the annual Red Cross Fair and the Miss Grand Thailand 2013 pageant, the province is working in collaboration with tourism offices and local administrative bodies to host the Pattani Peace Bikes 2013 on May 31 at the Central Stadium.

The event will comprise a road safety campaign and a tour of the province’s main attractions, including the Krue Se Mosque, the Lim Ko Niao Goddess Graveyard and the Provincial City Hall. The tour will be joined by over 200 big bikes and classic cars while concerts by famous artists will be held in the evening.

The move is set to ease fears and concerns of Pattani residents who have witnessed near-daily attacks throughout the province. A number of villagers have been killed in drive-by shootings during this month alone.
