Salted Herring ?

Featured Replies

helllo i want to make some salted herring as in the Dutch delicacy (Zoute haring)

and i know the waters around here are too warm for those fish to be around naturally

i know there should be around in the China / Japan seas but is there perhaps a more common fish which is easy to obtain fresh that is similar to the herring in built and taste

so i do not need to buy deepfrozen fishes

According to my wife that lived in Norway, there is nothing close to a herring here.

I bought what I was told was herring at Makro and also at Big C, I made my own pickled herrings . The outcome was terrible , even though I used a good recipe online , the fish just wasnt the same , so I presume they wernt herring after all . Most fish sold here are farmed river fish and not good to use and as for the sea fish , very limited on what you can buy . There are a few suppliers in Pattaya , Phuket and possibly BKK where you can buy tubs of herring that have been imported . Best bet is to ask at any restaurant from Scandenavia , Holland or Belgium where they buy there herrings they have on the menu . Several places such as friendship , rimping and Villa markets are now stocking jars of rollmop herring and bismark herring, abour 350bht for 500grm
