BKK residents urged to get rid of old tires to prevent dengue fever outbreak

BANGKOK, 29 May 2013 (NNT)-The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is launching a campaign against the dengue fever outbreak as 3,000 people in Bangkok reportedly contracted the disease during the first 3 months of this year.

According to BMA Deputy Permanent Secretary Sanya Cheenimit, the campaign is encouraging Bangkok residents to get rid of abandoned car tires as they can hold enough water to provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Bangkok people are advised to take their unused tires to spots designated by district offices across the capital, for easy collection and disposal by officials involved.

They are also encouraged to teach their youngsters on how to protect themselves from the dengue fever. Mr. Sanya said greater and consistent cooperation will certainly reduce the number of infections.

The latest figures revealed that from December 30, 2012 - April 13, 2013, 3,109 people in Bangkok had the disease with 1 death reported. People contracting the disease were mostly children, teenagers and young adults.

Take some off the cars as well, might save a few lives!

i thought they could sell them for recycling ( or at the next big red shirts ralley )

Get rid of old tyres?

This could destroy hundreds of businesses in Bangkok.

Just burn them. No one cares about the environment here anyway.

I do not understand why they limit the action to be undertaken to used car tires. Literally every water poodle or standing water pool after rainfalls , as well as flower pots with standing water, is an ideal breeding ground for Mosquitos. To limit it to car tires does not make much sense.

Ehhhhhh, whatever. The government kills two birds with one stone. If they take the tires for free and it helps to clear some trash, then everybody wins.

if they get rid of old tires what will the Sir Daeng use next time? thumbsup.gif

Clear the drains would help more whistling.gifclap2.gifcheesy.gifw00t.gif

Not too sure he's going to be much help next time 'round...

Bullet in the head and all that...

Aren't Thais embarrassed by these sorts of reports? They really do highlight a general lack of IQ
