Can someone tell me know how to be sure if a bottle of Jack Daniels or other expensive liquor is genuine or a perfect looking counterfeit (at least the bottle and box) from China ?

I know what they sell in Tachilek, Burma is fake, (not cheap because it's 'tax-free') although if you are drunk you might not mention that it has not the typical taste it should have.

Any professionals here who know what to look at ?

Taste would be a dead giveaway with Jacks. Its the only thing they couldn't fake.

Isn't that right Weegee!

The first give away is spelling mistakes , read everything on the bottle in look out for spelling mistakes.

Also the label color, hard to match the brightness.

I am no expert on alcohol fakes, but the 2 rules above usually apply to most fakes

Yep....Do not buy No7 Jack in thailand....it's anything but JD....SMELL helps, but you have to buy to open. If the Black seal is loose and you cant get your nail under it to rip it off....IT"S FAKE....Pick up your gentlemen Jack from Duty Free at Singapore. It's the real deal

They have corrected on those spelling mistakes in the past year,

This is what you do. run your finger over the lables and if they peel off easy then a cheap glue.

Another test i know of is A straw an water, add some on a straw and dip it in water and if its oily residue floats around then real. if it dose not then fake..

I was not aware that jack has fakes. but i have not really looked as i get my JD from Changi all the time.

If you drank a fake bottle you would get really sick the next day and possible a bad headache on that day witch a good whisky should not course.

Price is usually a dead giveaway.

If after consuming several bottles the "Jake Leg" comes on you'll know it's fake, although it could be real "something".

Ok, I join the bet Rubberduck. If you win you get 2 instead of 1 bottle of Weegee's stock. If you lose I get one .

I wouldn't trust that test, as that is how you can find out how much parrafine is in Mekhong wisky. Parrafine floats on water.

I do not think shops would allow anyone to open a bottle to test it, so the tests are really useless. Only when you bought it you can test it, by which time its also useless.

I still believe the label is a give away, another poster mention spelling mistakes have been fixed(though i think looking close enough, still may find some, in smaller print)

I bought a bottle of Jamiesons at the Savanakhet immigration shack in 95 , I drank it on the hard seat with a couple of fellas on the way down to BK . 5 US$ , I thought I had a miraculous bargain , that bottle nearly killed me , I was out of it and sleeping it off for three days and my youth was probably the only thing that saved my life . I just had to buy and drink that bottle .

Yep, the label should shine like a page from a good quality magazine. If the label is dull, has a matt appearance or generally lacks luster then it's fake.

I'd read something about a holographic picture on bottles of imported brands. Anyone who has a genuine bottle, does it have a holographic image ?

And, when you look in the bottle, does it have a batch code printed on the backside of the frontlabel ?

Thanks.

Exactly. They use the expensive glue on the inside. ;)

Supposedly this is one way to tell although it seems like this would be easy to fake, and unless you are familiar with the processing codes you may not be able to use this as an authentication method?

Did you see some "Jacque Danielles, Olde No. 9" somewhere? Where? What was the price?

Buy from a reliable source. Or drink Sangsom.
