Why are florescent lights practically everywhere and incandescent so rare in Thailand?

Rarely do i see tungsten or filament lights.

Is that the way the world is also heading?

I think the quality of the light is not nearly the same.

did you mean Florescent Tube vs tungsten point light ? if yes, then this may explain :

in Asian countries, most families prefer florescent light tube for more even and brighter GENERAL LIGHTING, and they also prefer cool light. Asian families perform a lot of household functions in the evening.

Western lighting concept is TASK light or MOOD light, apply a point light where you need it and keep the rest in relatively low intensity. Asian completely against this concept :-) looking up to a condo, by the colour of the light we could identify if the residents are local or fareng :-)

I saw this big debate between an Indian lighting specialist and an European lighting manager :-)

by the way, tungsten or filament light bulbs are not so environmental friendly and already been ban in some European countries. florescent light bulb and LED light bulb are the replacement.

incandescent bulbs are more susceptible to blow out from power surges/voltage variations etc.

prior to warm white flouro bulbs i was replacing at least one light bulb a week. Now one every 6 or so months

Flourescent tubes seem to give off a lot of light per watt, at least in comparison to incandescent. Maybe about equal to CCFL? Don't know about disposal or other issues.

almost, almost . . . compare the fluorescent tube ( or compact fluorescent lamp ) with the incandescent bulb, the fluorescent lights are much more environmental friendly. there are still very few heavy metals in the production as well as on the products.

ok, this is too technical. back to your original question - Thai prefer fluorescent light due to even general lighting in the room. most Thai don't even apply reflector on light, meaning they waste a big amount of light energy.
