Where Can Proper Hotel Bed Sheets Be Had, In Chiang Mai?

I do not know if you often sleep in hotels, but I don't like it very much. For one thing, the cheap hotels I used to frequent in the USA, sometime over 25 years ago, used to provide real cheap synthetic fibers for sheets and pillow cases, and one of those fake down pillows, with fake synthetic wool carpeting, for about USD100 per night. What garbage, and you woke up feeling like you had spent the night inside a plastic bag or something.

Then about 10 years ago, I noticed that when I would stay in hotels in Macao and other parts of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), I would be given rooms with high quality cotton sheets and pillowcases. I began to sleep like a baby. And I could not get enough of it. And I kept wondering where I could buy some of these, because I never saw them offered in the retail markets during any white sale promotions.

I asked a couple of hotels in China about these sheets, but they told me they would only sell them to me, and could not provide the name of their supplier, for USD100. What a crazy price.

Then when I came to Chiang Mai, I noticed that the sheets being used in some of the guest houses were just about as nice as the Macao variety. Well, almost as nice.

I have been to Lotus Tesco, and to Makro in Chiang Mai, but I have not seen these sheets for sale. Or maybe I do not know what to look for.

All I know is that I need about a half dozen prime quality sheets like what I have seen in the hotels.

I also don't know too much about thread counts, but I know that the best cotton comes from Egypt.

So that is what I guess I want, too.

Probably a hotel supplier might know where to get a good price on a premium product. Can anyone suggest how to get very good quality bed sheets and pillow cases at wholesale price?

Speaking of sleeping like an Egyptian,

I guess that is what I want, too.

Any help will be appreciated: I have only one set of sheets here to last me until I get some new ones. So thank you for any ideas.

And while you are thinking about Egyptian Cotton and where to source it at a good price in CM, here is a tune to get you in the mood for some things Egyptian:

I was at MAKRO, Mae Rim last week, and they had a section of hotel grade sheets. They looked extra heavy, and were by no means cheap. They also had pillow cases.

Do not try the malls in the city, as the prices are out of this world

Yes, I think you really need to deal with a wholesaler and buy samples or something. Maybe it is even worth opening a small shop and actually selling sheets just to finally be able to sleep comfortably.

There is a world of difference in comfort between what they usually sell retail and hotel grade premium products.

Maybe I should call the Oriental and ask for their supplier.

Maybe I would then sleep like a Mandarin.

(I just happened to think that it is a good thing Chiang Mai is not located on the coast, or then it would be opening a small shop to actually sell sheets by the seashore to sleep comfortably this summer.)

High thread count linens are not cheap anywhere. One of the problems is that mattress sizes very around the world which makes say, "Clavin Klien" sheets not very import friendly to Thailand due to the different sizes.

I have always bought all my quality linens overseas and just brought them back to my home here. Although the fitted sheets aren't always a perfect fit.

I have been in Macy's (US department store) and met many Asians buying bed sheets to take back to their country.

That's not especially true. The best sheets are at Central, hands down. Nowhere else comes close in terms of quality. Yes the prices are high but Central has sales at least 4 times a year on bed linens. We just got some ultra high-quality sheets, 450 thread count on sale marked down from 5 or 6K to 2K THB. They are the best quality sheets I have owned. The last 2 sets of sheets we bought about 6 years ago also at Central. The set we bought for the guest bedroom at a Thai market that were cheap, only lasted about 2 years before they fell apart.

Makro does have high-quality sheets but limited in terms of colors available.

The good Makro ones are their Aro brand. They are steep but not mall prices like the above or those in Robinsons/Index. This is the type used in hotels and they also have the dense nap towels there. I always check out the bumph when staying in decent hotels as they sometimes have deals on their kit... had a really good deal in Chiang Rai a few years back where they definitely undercharged us on bedding.

There is a tiny shop at the night market just around the corner from Burger King that sells hotel grade towels, robes, slippers, and such. I've never looked for sheets there (only by the towels), but they may have them or know where to get them. Their towels are very nice and last a long time.

What exactly have I said that is "not true"?

I said the prices at the malls are out of this world. Then you state "Yes, the prices are high".

The prices ARE high. 6K ($180.00) for a set of sheets! Presumably you're looking at a 'normal' set of sheets, which comprises fitted sheet and top sheet and matching pillow cases.

You also agree with me that Makro does have high quality sheets. rolleyes.gif

I also waited until ALDI's in Australia had a winter special. I bought a compete set of fitted and flat sheets, pillow cases, all made from Egyptian cotton and a certificate to prove it and a 12 month warranty.

Well-worth including in my extra luggage allowance and worked out to about 1/3rd the price Central were asking.

They are so good I keep them for the Chiang Mai winters, and at this time of the year, quite happy with what's available at the bedding store in Chang Moi Rd.

As for mattress sizes, this is a list of sizes for different countries on Google.

Finally, if the label really did say "Clavin Klien", I'd be a bit suspicious about their authenticity.

What is Clavin Klown but just poor quality and some funny sounding but worthless name?

The quality is NOT there. You need to buy quality and forget about brand.

So for underwear or sheets, or anything else, I would prefer to never buy Madison Ave products.

The only thing I said was that "prices at malls are out of this world" is not true. On sale, 2K THB for 450 thread count that lasts almost 6 years is a bargain. No top sheet as they are seldom used here in Thailand.

Well, it's about high time they started. Absolutely 'gustin.

Agreed. They use a great thick bed cover, suitable for below 10C. Just doesn't seem to be a tropical thing.

I've never seen this in other countries, and surely they wouldn't use air conditioning here.

I eventually found some top sheets in Central supermarket, but didn't match the bottom sheet. Shame!
