Im glad I dont live in Issarn. Its full of redneck farmers that dont really like farangs, a lot of them are equivelant to trailer park trash in the US. I found it horrible there. The locals are rude, the food is horrible. The farangs I met left a lot to be desired. Give me the south any day. Nice food, beautiful islands, lovely people

They certainly need a passport at Chom Cheum. When the casino first opened you could get into Cambodia to gamble with just an ID, that changed several years ago.

True. The ex-wife's passport had the stamps to prove it!

Sandman77,

Two observations.......1. All the conditions exist already in your relationship to make assured a great success........ as a bitter divorced and ripped off unfortunate old fool. Run Forrest! RUN!!!

2. Drinking to excess is an Issan tradition, even a way of life so long as the Farang is paying for it . When i first arrived in Issan several years ago, wanting to impress, I shouted a lot of alcohol on my first night and drinking went on 'till way past midnight . I went to bed and woke around 4am to answer a call of nature, and lone and behold , seated outside my bungalow in a tidy line was all the village men ready to start drinking again. I quickly learned the two essential Thai words.....'mai' 'bah' ....... NO and Go away. Serve me well to this very day .

I don't get hassled for money. As soon as the roof went on my house I deliberately put the word out that we had run out of money. I finished the house in very very slow time.... Still completing externals a year later. The village thinks I am broke more or less ..... This is useful!

I am very lucky; my wife takes care of the slightest suggestion of any disrespect towards me/us from our neighbours. I am lucky she is a school teacher so has a certain 'standing' in the community. Mostly people are very friendly .... Mostly all farmers of rice, corn, soy or peanuts.

We have drunks the same as any village. I don't participate. I have never felt threatened here unlike the city. I wish I could speak the language....I am a dunce in this respect.

Other piece of advice for those doing their homework in advance; get a usufruct granting you lifetime rights to the chanot before you put the roof on.

OK I stand corrected. Personally I haven't been over the border for years. However the last time I went to the border post there were hundreds of Thais waiting to cross to gamble. They were all holding passports in their sweaty paws. Whether these passports were stamped I cannot say.

No need for a poll TA. Honestly its not for everyone but then how many of us can handle Bangkok for more than a week? I put my hand up. How many of us can handle Pattaya for a place to call home? No way. not me. But plenty looove these cities.

The list goes on, its all in the eye of the beholder. Issan is a big place. Its not a trailer park in some US town. Its inhabitants are some 20million plus. I know plenty of falang that live up there in various regions, and all choose to stay because of the lifestyle. None stay because their wife wont let them leave. Irishlvan and his generalisations are narrow minded. I mean mate, keep your south, theres to many bombings, kidnappings and its full of muslim terrorists, but hey, the foods good!. Sorry Irishlvan, your narrow mind is wareing off onto me.

Most farangs choose to live in Isaarn because its cheap. No other reason

Drunken Isaarn farmers, wives and ex-wives, inlaws and outlaws. Grinding poverty and droughts, sounds lovely. What are the farangs like there? Lots of young hip go getters or what?

Not bitter, just a realist. But I have had my heart broken by a few bar girls, not enough to follow them to isaarn and hang out on the ranch

Buying a house in 3rd World peasantville without even knowing about the place.

Odd..... but bizarrely common!

What's Louisiana got to do with this?

I see many Irishmen settling in quite nicely in Isaan.

Either you can take it or you can't. Many of my neighbours don't talk to me, no problem. I have some friends here and a good honest family around me. Funerals, stuff like that - you have to live with it or at least get your house sound proofed.

Wonder how you insulate yourself from the world around you?

Happy?

I lived there for a year when I was 26.

Was great.

Probably not so great if you're 50, with no financial security, living among a community of leeches. But I had a ball. :)

Just in case anyone is thinking of moving out there, I would recommend renting out a house for the first 5 years. Try to regain possession of your testicles and do what you want, how you want. smile.png

And no, you don't owe them anything, so no need to feel guilty about the poor people eating bugs and twigs, they eat them because that's what they ate growing up and living in their environment, give them a plate of fillet mignon and buttered spuds and they'd rather eat the bugs and twigs. They got on fine before you and your wallet arrived, so you keep that for yourself.
