BANGKOK: -- The government will set up a special public relations team to communicate proactively with the public, Government Spokesman Teerat Ratanasevi said yesterday, adding that three PM's Office ministers would take turns at chairing the team.

The PR team will focus on five key areas: economics, politics, social issues, national security, and foreign affairs. Its first meeting has been scheduled for 3pm on Tuesday.

Separately, five other ministers have been put in charge of publicising a project or an issue.

Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt has been given the government's infrastructure projects; Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi the water-management project; Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong the rice-pledging policy; Defence Minister Sukampol Suwannathat the South insurgency; while Education Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana will focus on reconciliation and politics, Teerat said.

Meanwhile, the Information and Communications Ministry will be in charge of gathering data submitted by each of the ministers, which will be accessed by the PR team to use, clarify or tackle any criticism doing the rounds on social media. This proactive PR will be implemented through press conferences and advertisements, he said.

"For instance, with the rice-pledging scheme, the prime minister said we should not look to see which ministry is in charge but find out what happened, because it is related to Commerce and Finance as well as Social Development and Human Security ministries.

"The prime minister wants all ministries to work together and each ministry should have a representative ready to inform the public at the right time. When a problem occurs, they have to clarify it as soon as possible," he said.

The government spokesman spoke to the press after attending a meeting called by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra yesterday.

Now the PR team is to 'clarify and tackle criticism on social media'. It's an obsession. Social media is the avenue, not the cause. How about getting obsessed with the corruption itself rather than continually wasting time and resources trying to squash the groundswell of dissatisfaction?

Oh, and now more news on this same morning that DSI is READY to name the luxury car buyers. IMO, one can assume that (depending on who they are) when they turn up voluntarily, consideration might be given to supressing their names.

Underlining, mine.

Because putting fear into the people that they will be sued, jailed or "disappeared" if they express their dissatisfaction is the means to their goal. Stopping corruption is a means to an end of their gravy train, and runs counter to their goal.

Been that way for thousands of years here in Asia, and isn't going to change in our lifetimes.

Ask yourself this. If the government policy was really that good, would the government need a PR team? Or would the results speak for themselves?

This is a self admission of things really not going as well as planned and they now have to massage the truth via their PR team, to make it more palatable.

This probably comes about because yingluck looked pretty stupid not having any understanding about the rice losses.

I can see this lot holding their media calls like a game of pass the parcel so when a question is asked all the ministries reps will pass the microphone from one to another and whoever is holding the mike when the music stops will be required to prevaricate in response.

Corruption is systemic in Thailand woven into the culture. They first need to come out of denial and then make a statement like

"it's unfortunate that corruption has become a part of Thailand's culture and it is our intention to bring that to an end, therefore; we are creating a task force separate from present law enforcement that will steer our culture into the right direction."

But Thais are so protective of their culture they don't care that it's corrupt and it's perfect as far as they are concerned.

Hopefully the PR team will have more of a clue than the current clowns running the circus

Unfortunately they will probably be drawn from members of the circus and the civil servants will say what they are told to say.

Your last point is borne out by public opinion in poll after poll. I know we sometimes have a healthy suspicion of opinion polls but the same answer comes up time after time for as long as I can remember.

That's funny, put the corrupt in a position to deal with corruption....sort of like the most transparent administration currently running the United States.......politicians: many blood sucking parasites.
