Companies Asking For My Social Security Number! Not Comfortable With That

Hello,

More and more companies in the U.S. ask for social security number such as many financial and money-related businesses in their online forms. For confidentiality and security purposes, I'm really not comfortable giving my social security number to private third parties as I don't know how they secure data and can be exposed to identity theft.

Now I read on some websites that state you don't need to give your social security number even though some institutions such as banks are required to ask. According to those websites, which show some paragraphs about the law, you can request other types of identification in case you don't want to give your social security number.

So I'd like to know if that law saying we dont need to give a ssn is still applicable. If it is, how would you frame it to businesses asking for your ssn?

Thanks
