Is it absoluetly necessary to show proof of onward travel to obtain a double entry visa at the Thai embassay in Vientiane?

Also, in order to invoke the second entry I must leave the country by plane anyway, correct?

No and no.

Onward travel is not normally asked at Vientiane AFAIK and to obtain second entry you can just cross land into another country and return for normal visa allowed stay.

I have been in Thailand for 12 years now and I have had every type of visa imaginable and no one has ever asked me for proof of onward travel from Thailand
