Sitting with the MRS In Toronto and deciding what we are going to do with our life.

Moved back from LOS 2 years ago. We had to otherwise she would have lost her PRV. Since then she had gone to school and have recently finished her post grad.

We just came back from BKK and she was offered jobs and even I was given a tentative offer. In my case the compensation is better then what I'm getting in TO. For her the money would be less but better position and opportunities.

She needs another 1yr and 4 months to qualify for applying for CDN citizen. The process from application can take another 1-2years.

(Playing devils advocate) we leave without her getting her CdN citizenship. What are the benefits of being the loyal subject of the Queen?

Why does she need it?

It is really up to your own situation. In my case, although I am proud to be a Canuck, I can see very little advantage in my own citizenship, because I have very little happening back in the Great White North. But my wife would be absolutely thrilled to get CDN citizenship and we would go that route if we didn't have so many things going on over here.

I don't think royal opinions factor into it though.

Canuckamuck, thanks for your input.

Have to admit that its difficult. We already done 2 years, whats another 2 (hopefully) but we arenot getting younger. This is the time for her to build her career and me to establish mine.

Plus theres the whole can of worms of Thailand no allowing dual citizenship.

Why does she need it? Ask yourself why do you need it? Would you cancel yours if you could get a Thai citizenship? Ask yourself these questions: Where would you be spending your retirement, LOS of Canada? Wouldn't you/she want to get the Canadian pension for the said retirement? Do you have/ plan of having kids? Would they be better off growing up and getting their primary and secondary education in LOS or Canada?

I know where I would be when my GF and I get married and have kids.

Well, if she's not going to lose her PR (I don't know if there's any conditions to that) then go ahead and live wherever you like, she can always come back and get her citizenship later.

Thailand does allow dual citizenship. She can if applicable obtain in the future as a Canadian Citizen a Canadian Passport all the while holding her Thai Passport.

I would suggest she continue on her path to obtaining her Canadian Citizenship as it provides greater options for the future for not only yourselves but children. My Children are eligible for 3 passports, it opens up a world of possibilities for them in the future (school/work).

16 months doesn't sound like much time to wait for what woud be a lifelong potential exit plan.

If she got a PR, it's almost the same as citizen ship and she can still get it later. She's not really loosing anything.

Thailand isn't allowing dual citizenship isn't affecting anything, she still can hold 2 countries' passports when she gets citizenship later. Their children will automatically be Canadians as well as Thai at the time if birth.

Getting it done now and getting a passport will make a lot of things easier, traveling is one of them, then she could technically get a job as a Canadian in Thailand with some international company, and get Canadian, not local pay rate.

I know nothing about Canadian immigration rules; but with many countries PR will lapse if the holder spends a considerable amount of time out of the country.

For example; the UK equivalent, ILR, will lapse if the holder spends a continuous period of 2 years out of the UK. Furthermore, if it becomes apparent that the holder does not live in the UK and is using their ILR just for visits it will be cancelled.

From what you say in your OP about having to move back to Canada so she didn't lose her PRV it seems Canada has a similar rule.

In which case I would advise hanging on in Canada long enough for her to obtain Canadian citizenship as this will leave your future options open.

Thailand definitely does allow dual citizenship, and I understand Canada does too; so, apart from delaying your return to Thailand, you don't have anything to lose.

Actually 7by7 may be right that I think about it. I'm almost sure there is another step on a way to citizenship - landed immigrant? That is the status she'll get and keep after living in Canada for some years, a few years more will allow her to get citizenship. Landed immigrant status she will not loose and it is like citizenship except she won't be able to vote.

Thanks everyone for your input. its always good to talk things through.

As many have said, its only about 16 months before she can hand in her application. Even if we do "return" it will take several months of planning, by then it would be a waste to leave with just afew months left.

So she will try to get some cdn work experience while i try to get some govt subsidized skills upgrading.
