Change Non-Immigrant 'O' to Work Permit

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just wanting to find out how to change a Non-Immigrant 'O' one-year visa to a work permit?

I am doing volunteer work and organised the Non-Immigrant visa before I came to Thailand

The director of the organisation, who is a friend, was very casual about the work permit stuff - he said that I was just staying as a 'visitor'. He was going abroad on a holiday and I thought that we could organise the work permit when he gets back.

Well, this is a small community and it got around that there is a farang staying here. A police officer knocked on the door and asked me to teach english for someone.

I am by myself with the work permit things and not sure where to start. Do I have 3 months to convert the Non-Immigrant 'O' to a work permit? How do I find out the local Ministry of Labour address (everything is in Thai)? Is there an office in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai? Can I get a temporary work permit online?

Sorry to ask a noob question, but I am not sure how to organise this.

Thanks

The work permit is something totally different than the visa you have. You do not change to a work permit.

With correct paper work from the organization you are working with you can get the work permit at the Labor office in the Provence where you are working.

If you only have a single entry non-o visa you can extend your current 90 day entry for one year at immigration after you get the work permit.

Hi Ubonjoe,

I have a one year multi-entry Non-Immigrant 'O' visa.

How long do I have to apply for the work permit? The director is overseas on a holiday and hasn't organised the paperwork.

Can I organise a temporary work permit for myself? I have a letter of invitation and a copy of the charity's certificate.

Thanks

There is no time limit for getting the work permit.

Is there nobody else than the director to help you. You will not be able to get a temporary work permit.

But you can not legally work until you do so.

The director of your NGO may not be the only source of help with a work permit. If the local police need a volunteer english teacher they may be able to accompany you to your local labor office and provide the necessary documents to obtain a work permit.
