I am on a single entry non-b visa. Within the last couple of days I have only just realised it's a single entry. I thought the s on the number of entries columb was a poorly written 5. Seeing as though its in the numbers section. Anyway I came to Thailand to teach and my NON-B expires on the 6/6. I'm currently on a probation period at a school. After 2 months they are going to provide me with a work permit. I'd be grateful of any information anybody can give me, providing the best options to stay in Thailand until I have my work permit.

Thanks

Unfortunately the non immigrant visa in your situation cannot be extended (unless you would be married to a Thai national).

Additionally, you will not be able to get another non immigrant visa in one of the neighboring countries, unless your work permit has been applied for and your school has supplied all required paperwork.

Your only possibility to remain in Thailand will be to travel to one of the neighboring countries and applying for a tourist visa. When returning you'll be issued with a 60 day entry stamp, which can be subsequently extended for a further 30 days.

Also, it has to be noted that to be allowed to legally teach in Thailand, you do need to hold a work permit, even when on probation.

Even though a lot of schools apparently postpone (indefinitely in some cases) the procedure to get your teachers license (or waiver) and a work permit, this is in fact illegal and and you run the risk of getting arrested for working illegally, regardless of the fact that you are on probation.

Maybe some others better versed in the issue on work permits for teachers can elaborate or correct me.

Thanks for the info. Yes I know it's illegal towork in thailand thout the permit, but unfortunately its the only option I have for 2 months. Can I get a 60 day re-entry visa by travelling to cambodia then.

Thanks

Not sure I follow.

You do not have a visa now, as your single entry visa has been used.

Your only options are:

1) Cross a land border into another country and return, you will receive a 15 day visa exempt stay.

2) Fly out to another country and return, you will receive a 30 day visa exempt stay.

3) Travel to another country and apply for a tourist visa at a Thai consulate or embassy, wait till you can pick it up, return to Thailand and you will be given a 60 day entry, which you can extend without leaving Thailand or a further 30 days.

In case number 3, in Laos it would be possible to get a double entry tourist visa, allowing you two entries of 60 days each. Most other countries close by will issue only a single entry, and currently in Pnomh Penh it seems to be possible no visa at all will be given, so definitely not advisable to go there!

Be aware it is totally illegal to be working on a tourist visa and a work permit can not be issued on such a visa entry. You need school to apply for work permit now.

Excellent reply, as a teacher I could not say much more than you have.

1. Another non-B single entry 90 days will be issued based on the paperwork of your future employer; that doesn't need to be a WP-application. Any Thai Embassy or Consulate will do.

2. There may be a chance to take the school's paperwork to the nearest immigration office; put on your friendliest face, look like a puppy dog and ask for an extension until the WP-application is settled. You do have a "NO", "YES" is what you can get.
