Lite Beer
Thailand burns big narcotics cache to mark world drugs dayBy English News BANGKOK, June 26 – A total of 3,363 kg of drugs, seized in 2,584 cases and worth more than Bt10 billion, were set ablaze today. The burning, witnessed by diplomats, senior government officials and the media, marked the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.Deputy Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said the drugs mostly included methamphetamine and heroin while 2,603 kg of drugs confiscated by the Crime Suppression Division were also burnt. He said global drug trafficking has been increasing, but Thailand has targeted rehabilitating at least 300,000 drug addicts from an estimated total of two million drug users.One-third of those who have undergone rehabilitation in the last nine months were aged 18-24 and 92 per cent of those were male, he said.Labourers represented the highest group of drug addicts at 45 per cent, followed by the unemployed at 17 per cent, farmers at 14 per cent and students 7 per cent. The most widely used drug is methamphetamine at 84 per cent, ice at 5 per cent and marijuana or pot at 4 per cent respectively.According to the United Nations’ World Drug Report 2012, about 230 million people, or 5 per cent of the world's adult population, are estimated to have used an illicit drug at least once in 2010. Problem drug users number about 27 million, which is 0.6 per cent of the world's adult population.Throughout the world, illicit drug use appears to be generally stable, though it continues to rise in a number of developing countries. Heroin, cocaine and other drugs kill around 0.2 million people each year, according to the latest UN report. In the case of Thailand (and neighboring Laos, where amphetamine use has increased as well), the drugs have a clear, identifiable source – Myanmar. The UN reports that unstable states, such as Myanmar and several West African nations, have become factories for the international trade in amphetamines. Marcel1
It started as a interested article.. till I came to read 2 mil. drug users.. Here I started to doubt wether they only mean Bangkok. A rough estimation from my side would ve more heading towards 10 mil. nation wide. as drug users to me are diffrent than drug addicts..

andrewrooney
Ice is methamphetamine, the wording in the article doesn't make much sense. Perhaps they meant to say 84% Yaba, 5% ice as another poster mentioned. Anyhow I'm quite upset that world drugs day came and went and nobody got me anything nice
