Surapong meets consulate officers, focuses on facilitating Thai citizens

BANGKOK, 27 June 2013 (NNT) – Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul has met with consulate officers from around the world and instructed them to help Thai citizens living overseas. The ministry is also planning on opening up more consulates in 5 years’ time.

The minister gave his speech during the meeting with consulate officers, saying consulates are the gateways to the country and the first to lend a hand to Thai citizens living abroad in need of help. Not only just Thais do consulates need to be looking after, but foreigners as well; especially those who want to do business in Thailand or are looking to legally enter the country. He said consulate job is a path to being a diplomat, for which the knowledge required cannot be learnt from textbooks, but must be acquired through experience. The minister also told them to keep up the good work.

Mr Surapong further revealed that the ministry was planning to open up more consulates around the world, saying there would be at least 25 consulates in the next five years.

Lastly, the minister said online visa database will be promoted in order to ease the workload of officers searching for personal history of each visitor in order to effectively prevent criminals from entering the country.

ECONOMY
SET up on lower US growth
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand index is expected to be in the green zone today, following the downward revision in the US first-quarter economic growth rate.

The index ended the morning session with a gain of 4.21 points or 0.30 per cent, to 1,428.59 points on turnover of Bt29.97 billion.

The US economy grew at a slower pace in the first quarter than originally estimated, expanding at an annualised rate of 1.8 per cent over the fourth quarter of 2012, the government said Wednesday.

The final figure for the quarter was 0.6 percentage points lowerthan the updated assessment made last month, after personal consumption was less than estimated, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said. The growth rate was nevertheless better than the 0.4-per-cent expansion seen in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Thai stocks analysts now expected that the US Federal Reserve may keep in place the quantitative easing, given the poorer-than-expected economic condition.

Govt told to closely watch exports and baht movement
By Digital Media

BANGKOK, June 27 – The private sector today called on the government to seriously concentrate on improving Thailand’s exports and avoid measures that jeopardise private sector business.

In a panel discussion organised by a Thai business newspaper, Kan Trakulhoon, president and CEO of Siam Cement Group (SCG), said Thailand’s exports in April and May were severely battered by the strong baht and the volatile exchange rate.

The US economy shows signs of recovery but isn't likely to impact Thailand in the near term, he said, adding that China’s economy starts showing signs of troubles.

The new Yingluck Shinawatra cabinet, expected to be announced soon, should look into the plight of the private sector which is feeling the pinch from current capital outflows.

The baht, whether strong or weak, has a powerful impact on the private sector -- which is the major driving force of the Thai economy, he said.

Mr Kan said that private sector sentiment will be stagnant unless there is a clear understanding of the government’s Bt2 trillion spending on infrastructure development and the Bt350 billion anti-flood plan.

Porametee Vimolsiri, deputy secretary general of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), said Thailand’s 2013 economic growth will be adjusted from 5 per cent to 4.7 per cent, given the disappointing economic performances in April and May.

He warned of possible capital outflows later this year as the global economy has yet to fully recover, adding that Thailand will emphasise tourism development in the second half of this year.

Poj Aramwattanont, president of Wales & Co Universe, urged the government’s new economic team to more vigorously supervise the export sector and refrain from adding problems, such as the minimum wage increase and the rocketing baht, onto the private sector.

Mr Poj, president of the Thai Frozen Foods Association, said the government’s weak points in its two-year administration should be eliminated and investments for mega projects must be transparent. (MCOT online news)

Finance Minister says THB 2-trillion loan will definitely spur economy

BANGKOK, 27 June 2013 (NNT) - Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Rong has expressed his confidence that the government’s two-trillion-baht loan will benefit the country’s economy. The loan will also help the economy grow healthily after the projects funded by it are completed.

On 26 June 2013, Mr Kittiratt attended a seminar on the two-trillion-baht loan, saying the loan bill would help prevent the government from borrowing more than two trillion baht in seven years. The loan would be only 1% of the country’s GDP over the period of seven years, the minister said. Mr Kittiratt reiterated that the loan would be favorable to the Thai economy.

Regarding the progress of the loan bill, the minister said it was being reviewed by an ad-hoc committee and expected it to be on the agenda of a House session this August when the House considered the 2014 budget bill, Mr Kittiratt said.
