Declan O'Malley had decided to make the journey from his small village in Co. Clare to London. He was in the pub on his last night before travelling saying his goodbyes when he came to the widow Dunne.

"Oh, Declan," she says, ye know I'm a poor widow woman, and my only son Nealy went to London over a year ago. In all that time I've only had one letter from him. Could you find him for me and let me know how he's doing? He lives in WC1."

"Of course I will, Mrs. Dunne. Leave it to me."

To cut a long story short, having got the ferry to Pembroke and then a train, he arrives at Paddington station. Having left the platform and entered the main concourse he notices a sign pointing to "WCs."

He follows the sign through a doorway and sees a line of numbered doors.

He goes up to door number 1 and knocks, loudly asking "Are you Nealy Dunne?"

"Yes," comes the reply, "but there's no paper!"

"Well," shouts Declan, "get some and then write to yer mother!"
