LPG price to be maintained until next month

BANGKOK, 29 June 2013 (NNT) - The Energy Policy Administrative Committee has resolved to maintain the household Liquefied Petroleum Gas price for another month until the end of August.

Energy Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal said after the meeting that the freeze on the LPG retail price at 18.13 baht per kilogram will give related agencies and affected businesses time to prepare for the impact.

The meeting also agreed to gradually raise the price of cooking gas by 50 satang a kilogramme a month from September 1 onwards. The price will rise for 12 consecutive months to reach 24.82 baht per kilogram by October 2014.The price adjustment reflects the movements of gas prices in the global market.

The Energy Policy Administrative Committee has prepared measures to lessen impact on low-income households and food vendors who will be entitled to different levels of subsidies from the agency once the price is floated. Up to 168,000 vendors nationwide can still apply for the subsidy at provincial commerce offices.

Officials find no discrepancies in Lamphun, Buri Ram
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- No discrepancies or signs of deception were found in the inspection of rice mills in Lamphun and Buri Ram provinces on Thursday and the quantity of rice in Lamphun's three rice mills was correct.

The rice in Buri Ram's six warehouses and six rice mills participating in the rice-pledging scheme also met the required quality and quantity.

However, relevant officials will continue inspecting rice mills in the two areas after discrepancies found last year cost the government more than Bt44 million.

The case was brought to prosecutors in November last year and is being examined before being taken to court. The 31 suspects behind the discrepancies included officers of the Public Warehouse Organisation, owners of the rice mills, local politicians and farmers.

After discrepancies were recently found in Phichit, farmers filed a complaint against the middlemen and a rice mill. The farmers in Muang district suffered damage worth Bt18.6 million involving up to 1,601.65 tonnes of rice, while discrepancies in Pho Thale district caused losses worth Bt2.6 million involving up to 5,000 tonnes of rice.

The Marketing Organisation for Farmers has filed a complaint against the rice mill for misappropriating funds. An arrest warrant has been issued for all involved parties.

Opposition to impeach cabinet for water megaproject
By Digital Media

BANGKOK, June 29 – The opposition Democrat Party is planning an impeachment against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her cabinet for breaching the constitution in connection with the water management megaproject.

Jurin Laksanawisit, the opposition’s chief whip, charged the government with violating Sections 57 and 67 of the constitution in holding bids for the Bt350 billion water management scheme without conducting Environmental Health Impact Assessments (EHIAs) and public hearings.

The government has also acted counter to laws preventing corruption and auction collusion, he said, referring to last week’s announcement of four bid winners, including a financially-dubious South Korean corporation, in the widely-criticised project.

The Administrative Court on Thursday ordered a halt to the project, pending EHIAs and public hearings.

Mr Jurin said the Democrat Party will submit a proposed impeachment of the cabinet to the Senate speaker next week. (MCOT online news)
