I'm looking for folk music singers and players

The group that I'd been playing with for several years seems to have morphed into a 30's,40's, and pop music group while I was away. Nice music and nice people, but I'm a folk guitar player. I'm a 'minstrel' rather than a 'musician' despite playing guitar for the past 50 years. And I want to play folk music with other folkies. American folk and blues, British traditional folk tunes, sea chanteys, old camp songs sung around the fire, etc.

I don't care if you can only play 3 chords and sing with a range of half an octave. I can play more chords but I sure can't sing more notes... If you like folk music and want to get together regularly to play and sing, get in touch with me. Think "Kingston Trio," "Joan Baez," "Peter, Paul, and Mary," "Child Ballads," "Fairport Convention," "Pentangle," etc. and let's play!

By the way, no limit on instruments. Guitar, banjo, uke, Spoons, hand drums, mandolin, fiddle, kazoo, nose flute.... If you enjoy playing it, and play folk music, (at any level) I'll be happy to sit down with you for a 'hootenanny!'

I'd love to. Sadly, I can only get to Chiang Mai occasionally (I work in Malaysia). I've got a voice and a set of harmonicas. I'll be in town 13 July 13 - 23.

Right now, we usually get together on Tuesday evenings. If you want to play in, or just listen and enjoy some good music, come on down. We start playing around 7:30 at 'The Garden' guest house on Ratchadamnern Rd, just east of the Writers Club bar.

I thought so too, but it would seem that, like so many other rules and regulations here, it's somewhat arbitrary, and they've never once shown up to say anything, As long as we don't set up with amps there doesn't seem to be any problems.

No, Chiang Mai is not clamping down on amateurs getting together to have a good time. The brouhaha a couple of years ago did include a couple of amateurs that were sitting in with some others who were basically interested in making music for money at a very popular jazz joint. There was a "raid" after a complaint from an envious competing venue. A couple of really innocent sit-in players were rounded up with the general bunch. They were let go, no penalty, but the hassle wasn't fun for them. The others, not so innocent, basically got off eventually with a slap on the wrist. So, if some amateurs get together to have some fun, have fun but don't make it look like some sort of financial endeavor if you are meeting in places which sell booze and have wild women!

We sit around a table off to one side of the outdoor area, very different from the guest house's regular 'for pay' Sunday musicians who are amplified, use mics, and sit in front of all the dining tables. Some of us are eating while we play, drinking, or just chatting while others play. Very informal, very laid back, but lots of good folk music, blues, and some pop tunes too. Everyone is welcome to sit in with any instrument (I don't think tuba or bagipes would work but...) or just sing if that's what you feel like doing. And doing absolutely nothing is fine too! Sit and listen, maybe tap your feet. We're there just because it's fun.

That's all fine until the next time some crap Thai singer who can't speak a word of English but has learned to warble his way through a repertoire of 30-40 'Country Roads' type songs, gets out of work and decides that Farang are stealing his thunder and grasses them up to Plod who comes wading in with his size 12's. This 'Chiang Mai Creative City' crap cannot become reality until foreign musicians are guaranteed that they can jam without fear of arrest - even if they do get a couple of beers for doing so.

If you can play one like that fellow who used to play the Sunday walking street mkt, with all the bells and whistle along with it, I'm sure you'd be a welcome addition! Certainly more than if you played the Nose Flute!! wai2.gif

I couldent really get the hang of it so I gave it away when I moved here.

On a serious note I saw a Blues band once that had a bag piper in it.

Didn't play a lot of tunes but always fit right in when it did. It sounded like it had always been a part of the song.

Yeah, I suppose so, Pedr. But, appreciating you've been through a rough time, there's no sense being paranoid. Jai yen yen. Enjoy taking the children to school until you have to answer the bell yourself.

Part of what got the musicians in trouble during the "Big Round-up" was the fact that they were on overstay. As mentioned, those who truly were just sitting-in jam session, weren't trying to turn their music into a paying endeavor and were in the country legally, didn't have problems aside from the inconvenience of having to spend a night in a Thai jail.

I believe those who "got off" were all young tourists -- so this was just another interesting life experience for them. It makes for a great blog post, doesn't it?

How can you play the Blues if you haven't spent time in jail? Having your true love run off with a cardiac surgeon, die during a liposuction procedure, or have your Audi brake down on Rt.1 in South Beach just doesn't cut it! As David Bromberg sings; 'You got to suffer if you wanna sing the Blues!'

We had a few new people show up last night, one playing guitar and the other two just table tapping along with the music. We played until almost 11pm and put out some pretty nice music, even without our usual flute-player giving us melody and harmony lines.. A good time was had by all! I hope more people can come and join us next week!

Hey Folkguitar,

Do you guys still meet up?

How many times a week do you guys get together and usually how long does a session last for?

Sounds like fun, I'm always interested in meeting up with other guitar players/musicians.

Do you play any blues or folkblues?

Thanks.

Yes, we are still playing. This group started about 8 years ago and has been playing regularly ever since. But... as with any group, the faces have changed over the years, and the music genre changes with them. I'd really love to bring is back to 50's and 60's American Folk music. My musical roots grew in the Greenwhich Village folk scene of the early 60's....Think Kingston Trio, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul, and Mary, "Child Ballads," Leadbelly, Gordon Lightfoot, Woody Guthrie, Pentangle, Carter Family, Pete Seeger, The Limelighters, etc.

Personally I'll play along with almost any type of ballad, blues, jazz, country, etc. but prefer the older stuff. Sharing music is what it's all about. Even learning new ways to play, learning new skills, etc. I'd even love to have someone show up who could teach me some music theory! I'm pretty much 'self-taught,' and that's limiting my own learning curve. If someone could give us a 15-minute mini-lesson each week between the breaks, it would improve all our skills! Doubt it would make our singing any better, but that's never stopped us before. If you can put out a tune on an instrument, or just enjoy singing along, you'll fit right in.

Right now we get together one night a week at a guest house in the Old City. (More often would be better.) It's a comfortable venue for us. We sit around a table in the corner and play. . No money, no 'open mic' stuff, no amps, no performing for an audience,... We're not out to 'entertain' anyone other than ourselves. We generally start playing around 7:30, and depending upon the energy levels, play until 10:30-11:00 Just friends playing together to enjoy the music.

If you're interested, contact me and I'll give you full details.

It IS lots of fun! And it's the only real Folk Music hobby group/club that I know of in Chiang Mai. There is good Blues being played in several bars around town, and even some Bluegrass, but that's being done by paid performers. We aren't paid and we don't perform. We just enjoy. Hope to see you tonight!

It was nice meeting you last night. A lot of good music between us! That Italian fellow I was talking with plays some good Doc Watson-style Bluegrass!

Folk music really is International! I hope to see you playing in again next week.

Hey, sorry for late reply,

It was great fun on Tuesday, thanks for having me..

Will definitely be there next tuesday.

Guys, anyone else interested, you should check it out, it's a good laugh.

The songs that they like to play only have a few chords and really not hard to play along to,

also there were people there who just came for a beer and a listen.
