First I know there have been many threads on this issue but i'm needing information from just the koh samui forum and Im looking mainly only at TOT and 3BB as my house only supports these 2 at the moment. By the way I have tot fiber at my office and 3BB premier at home. Mainly my issue comes down to speed and pricing although seems like everyone on samui is getting different speeds. heres my experience

At home I have 3bb premier - price is 2,675 for 5 mb download - reliability has been 95% for the last 2 years in terms of internet connection and internet speed regardless of day or night ( I do realize that might be hard to believe but also keep in mind my house had new phone lines installed around my area a few years back. also could be just dumb luck I dont know

at office tot fiber - price is 1,350 baht for 10 mb download - reliability has been good in terms of internet connection but in terms of speed it slows by 50% in mid morning to afternoon only late evening or early morning can get top speeds

just want to know for everyone else and other tot and 3bb internet packages, if you have had good luck in terms of high speed downloads a lot of time as well as internet connections meaning it does not go down a lot. I just ask all of these questions as I want internet speed faster than what I have now but would like to pay less that what I am paying now.

Look forward to all your postings on this.

I am living in Plai Laem and have a TOT Adsl Landline. The package is 10 mbts down and 512 kbs upload for 590 baht a month. The connection is quite reliable. With a speed check with a server in Germany i usually get about 7 mbts download but only about 100 kbts upload speed. When I am online sometimes the servers have time outs for seconds or up to 3 to 4 minutes. Also sometimes at some weekend nights TOT seems to work on their servers and then the adsl connection is down for a few hours.

Over all it is not all that bad and I am quite satisfied with the service.

Cheers,

Carlos

Premier seems to me to be a marketing gimmick.

3bb 13/1 though I get close to 15/1. The vast majority of my traffic is large direct file transfers to and from the US and the EU which is all that matters to me. Ping time means nothing to me though there is a recent thread about it. Line is very active day and night. Line drops out every few days for perhaps a minute max. If it is more than a minute and during working hours I Freephone the company and report it and also keep a personal log which I present at the 3bb desk in Lamai from time to time and get a small discount on my bill. Cost is 962 Baht per month including 7% tax, I'm happy as Larry and have been for getting on 4 years.

Same story for me.

and me (on my laptop) smile.png and most of my neighbours on 3BB

although the short downtimes seem to be more frequent in recent months. Still very short though. thumbsup.gif

My desktop running on a TOT line is much more unreliable.sad.png

I found that most of the downtimes are caused by non reachable DNS servers.

I changed the default DNS to Googles (open) DNS servers and have much less problems now.

just curious to know for everyone download speed if its been good while downloading any bit torrents or downloading files through a download manager. Any slow downs in terms of speed during the morning or afternoon?

By the way i agree the premier is probably just a marketing thing but need to get others opinions on the matter before i change over.

.

I'm using TOT and just so long as the torrent is reasonably seeded I can get over 1MB/sec. Just tried it out 2min ago and downloaded a music torrent with an avarage of 1.2MB/sec...peaked at 1.8MB/sec

3BB are great i pay 650bt for 10MB and get up to 15MB very little down time and great customer service. Also no TOT phone line needed, direct feed from 3BB

I use 3BB the 13Mbit/1Mbit offert.

I never have a downtime but oversea connection on Skype and so are really really bad!

My Girlfriend use True and on True I have much better experience then 3BB.

After my Contract is finish I will change to True.

The questions always is: what do you really need?

3 BB I have found good...thumbsup.gif I just moved and had slow connection which they came right out and worked on the line, now OK... Their service is good ....thumbsup.gif

I have heard so many complaints about TOT I would never go there... but it may depend on area too....wink.png

3bb current service for me at my office is utterly pathetic btw. Its actually rather good at my home 10kms away. Make of that what you will.

It's the same as with real estate.

Location, location, location.

Also how many heavy users on your segment makes a big difference.

I also noticed that 3BB caps the line after a few Gigs download during the day.

Speed will go down 10 fold. At exactly twelve o'clock the speed will be normal again.

You might well be right about the location. Its absolutely hopeless again today which makes it nearly a week now. However i am assured by their staff that every things ok, everythings working fine, so i must be imagining the crap reception i'm getting! facepalm.gif

i dont use 3bb because they are all idiots in the office.

I had to close because there system conffused me so much that the head ache was too much.

went with tot and witha firber optic cable. the speed is faaster and cheaper i service i find better.

The basic package is ok with 3bb but depends on what work u use and where u are located on the island.

Thought this deserved a bump to say how utterly crap 3bb is. Crashed about ten times today, but guess what, apparently theres nothing wrong. Well i suppose i must be imagining my lack of internet throught the morningthumbsup.gif

Out here in Plai Laem 3BB is far superior to TOT. I have both, and 3BB is much more reliable and usually faster.

Both hang from time to time, but a refresh usually works. (I suspect PC or modem problems, but I am unable to resolve it.)

Try changing the DNS on the modem.

8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4 are google's open DNS servers and work way better than the 3BB DNS servers.
