What brand of GPS to buy?

Featured Replies

I have a Garmin Nuvi 260W that I bought in NZ 5 years ago.

Last month I dropped it and broke the screen.

I rang ESRI and they told me it had to go to Garmin Taiwan and I emailed EagleGPS yesterday but no response so far.

I live 400 km from BKK or Chiang Mai and would like to get it repaired if the price is not too high.

Does anyone knowof a repair shop?

We have changed the webhost, because we did miss some e-mails in the past (+ other issues). Looks like there are still some troubles. Sorry about that. Kindly resend the e-mail. Perhaps directly from our website would be more convenience.

Regarding the repairs in Taiwan. It may take 1.5 to even 3 months. And often the cost is quite high. Not because of our commission ;) (usually 2-3%, mostly used for shipping expenses).

I'm afraid there is no authorized shop in Thailand for this kind of repairs. It can be done, but there is always some risks of losing the unit, and actually pay more at the end. :(

I just saw the newer garmin nuvi 42 units yesterday. This is really the way to go considering op. It is cheap, functions great (based on the way my nuvi 1250 works) and will def be all one needs for navigating in Thailand.

They are priced at 3990 right now. I think for what you are getting this is an amazing price.

I brought a Garmin nuvi 42 last year from Eagle and it works very well. Even in CNX

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

I have a technical question about GPSes - in Bangkok, many streets are "time sensitive" in terms of lanes and directions - particular hours of the day you can go certain directions, other times not. Do any of the GPSes available take these into account when plotting routes?

Just an update,my Garmin Nuvi 42,screen started freezing(a common fault). I took to Eagle GPS in CNX after re/booting and updating it,but just got I no can do!.

And I brought it from them, they told me to tale it to Garmin BKK,great.

BKK Garmin told me to sent it to them, but as I was going to BKK anyway,I took it there.

They were wonderful, told me to come back in a hour, loaded new software and no charge .

Very good service, shame about Eagle, surely they must have software updates?.

I went to Amarin Plaza, Gadget Trend the other day hoping that the sales people would be able to show me how good the Garmin units are.

I hired a car a few weeks back with a Garmin GPS in it and it took me 30 minutes to find and program my destination, I was not impressed with the way the search functions work at all.

But I thought that it would just be because I was a numpty and if someone showed me how to use it I would be fine.

So as a test when in Gadget Trend I looked at Google maps on my phone, chose a street name in a town (Kanchananburi) and asked the sales lady to show me how to search for it, she tried three times, no result found... Never mind, probably a different spelling of the street name in English I thought, lets try a different street.... same no result found....

Needless to say I left the shop without spending the thick end of 6000 Baht on a machine that can't do what my 4000 baht mobile phone can do.....

Shame really as I really wanted a GPS, anyone any experience with Papago?

Is it easy to use in English language and can it easily switch from English to Thai? I will need to use English and the gf will need to use Thai.

Its very easy to use in English, it also has a Nostra guide built in.

The 42 only comes in English OR Thai, the dearer models have both. But don't try and add Thai on an English version,as it will then always default to Thai language on the Map and the voice detection can't work properly. I find it invaluable, I drive a fair bit and its means your never really lost. Cheers

Hi I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 2465 ,model. it was second hand but nearly new, still under warranty. The instructions are in Thai and I have more trouble and problems getting it to show me the way to go than you can shake a stick at. There is a road that a friend showed to me that runs between two more ways home. If I use it I save around 30 kilometers. Why does not the Garmin suggest this way home? Another thing ,how do you cancel the trip you are doing so you can alter you destination? I have tried to change my trip several times and cannot appear to change it, I close it down, type in cancel trip and other things nothing works. Any advice would be welcome. Once I programmed it for a certain place I arrived . Good I thought. Then I programmed it for home . I t started off and after around an hour I ended up where I had started from. Was I p. off!

^ When you made the route which Navigation selection did you select ? Faster Time or Shorter Distance.

If you wanna make a route that goes from Point A to Point B but it has to go via "Via Point 1" and "Via Point 2" you have to set this in your GPS. Also maybe the Map (you have in your device) could be a bit older and maybe doesn't even show the road (yet) your friend showed you.

In my GPS I have set Home to where I live (obvious wink.png ) so whereever I am in Thailand and click go Home, it will route to there automatically, did you change the Home POI by any chance ?

If you wanna make a route which has to go via specific Via Points, the easiest way to do that is to use Basecamp (A free download from Garmin - http://www.garmin.com/en-US/shop/downloads/basecamp). I connect my GPS to my Computer and then make the routes I want.

However you can do this also in your GPS, but it's more time consuming and (for me personally) I find it easier to work on my 32" PC Screen then on a 5" GPS Screen.

Ps: For an English Manual send the Guys from GPS Society an Email, they can maybe help:

Why does not the Garmin suggest this way home?

(1) what version map are you using? if it is outdated it might not have all the available options.

(2) per MJCM said, your Garmin can be set to optimise for different things - "shortest distance", "shortest time" etc., the route it will offer you will differ based on this. Also, you can define "exclusions"/avoidances - especially because it's not a new unit, it may be set to avoid using particular roads, for example. You need to check your own device settings. English language instructions/manuals can be found online even if the booklet is in Thai.

Another thing ,how do you cancel the trip you are doing so you can alter you destination? I have tried to change my trip several times and cannot appear to change it, I close it down, type in cancel trip and other things nothing works.

When the GPS is first turned on you should be on the main screen. There is a "Where To" on the left, and "view map" on the right. You tap on the "where to" to program in where you're going, and then the system switches you to the map view right? In map view there will be a button to return you to the main screen. When there is a destination currently programmed, there will be a circle with a cross (a universal sign for cancel?) on the bottom left (below the "Where to"). Tap that and you can cancel the current destination program.

I find street addresses etc. in Thailand to be generally unworkable in English, because there's basically no spelling "standardisation". And I don't know the difference between, say, "Sukhumvit Soi 1" and "Sukhumvit 1 Soi" (things like this show up all the time when I have to find addresses in Bangkok).

When I've relied on the GPS for navigation I've almost always relied on the "points of interest" database (searching for particular hotels, landmarks etc. - but even for that there can be issues if there aren't any English names for the place, Thai-->English transliteration is really quite random in terms of spelling). Businesses/shops are surprisingly well represented in the database too. And I've noticed a lot of business websites outright stating their GPS coordinates.

I've not regretted buying my Garmin - so much so I've never considered exploring alternatives.

This is why I finally decided to go with my Android as a navigator. I can look for the place on Google maps at home, put a little star at the location (my saved places) and then navigate there the next day. The problem mentioned elsewhere about having to keep the phone on your lap is solved by getting a mounting for the dash board, isn't it? On the truck I glued a plastic box to the dashboard and put the phone in there. The only niggle I have about smart phones, in my limited experience, is that they can overheat and turn themselves off, despite air conditioning. This inevitably happens when you are getting to a tricky bit, one time I missed the toll road and was stuck in traffic jams for over an hour.

This is also what I have been doing since my post. Google has not got me lost even once. The real time traffic status is now even better than it used to be too. Of course you don't need your phone on your lap, with all the sucker and clamp gizmos available! I have mine at eye height near the A pillar. My phone has never overheated or shut down though. The biggest problem I have had is people calling me just at a crucial junction!

Sent from a telephone, which make and model is no concern of yours….

<snip> The biggest problem I have had is people calling me just at a crucial junction!

That's one of the main reasons why I have a dedicated GPS device, and I don't have a Data Plan (not much online on my phone) which I think is needed if you use Google for Navigation.

I can make nice routes on my PC which I can send to my GPS, and I don't know if that is possible with a phone GPS ?
