Dengue fever crisis looms in parts of Thailand

BANGKOK, 8 July 2013 (NNT) - Continuous heavy rains and rising temperatures are leading to a major outbreak of dengue fever this year, which has killed over 60 patients since the beginning of this year.

In Uttaradit province, the local health unit said that the number of dengue fever cases reported is three times higher than that of last year. Following days of torrential rains, water containers in a number of communities have become breeding habitats for mosquitoes.

The provincial body has been spraying mosquito repellent in affected areas and has launched an aggressive campaign to fight the upsurge in dengue fever.

Mahasarakham health unit has also reported a rise in the number of dengue fever patients, totaling 969 this month.

The Public Health Ministry has launched a campaign to combat the disease, which is feared to hit a record high of 120,000 cases this year.

Its been on the tv news, its been in the papers, but still the thais are putting water lilys in big flower pots full of water around everywhere. Its a fact that it is a great deal of people who dont watch other things on tv than soaps, and if they look in a newspaper it is to look for the latest lottery numbers. Maybe the health ministry should use its personell to walk from door to door and tell the ignorants what dangers they are exposing us to. It sertainly dont seem to help to go around and spray whatever it is they are spraying once a year. I live in a town house, and have a neighbor who has put one of them big mosquito breeders just outside my door, ive tried talking to her telling her about the dangers, but she dont understand nothing. Im at a loss what to do. Ive had dengue once, and i tell u it was a hell to get through, it took me about six months to recover. Should i smash the things or what.

Buy some small tropical fish, put in the flowerpot of water & they'll eat the Mosquito larvae... problem solved

I suggest guppies or platys. You'll never run out of replacements as long as you start with about 1 male and 4 females

Yes, it is not an unsolvable problem. Prevention is better than cure (which there is not). Perhaps a public health campaign by the Thai government? This could be part of the better health process that requires all tourists to have medical insurance.

I was horrified when I moved into my new rented house a few weeks back, as the street and the house was lined with water-filled lotus pots.

However, the neighbours are very mosquito alert, and the pots mostly have fish in them and not a larvae in sight, and they also use a brew which is designed to go in the tanks and the mozzies don't breed.

So 10/10 to my new neighbours, who I might add are so friendly and helpful.

In my area in Ching Mai we received a small pack of "sand". We are suppose to put one gram per lit of standing water. There was no charge for it. It is time to take out the big guns on this problem and I believe that the Thai people will come together on this one. Fog the ditches, put the insecticide sand as directed, ware repellant. The mosquito must bite someone who is infected and then go on and infect others within a small radius. If we all work together we can curb this problem.

All you have to do,in any vessel that contains water, like your neighbor ,put a teaspoon of kerosene in the water it seals of the surface and the mozzies (larvae) cant breath and die ,we always do this in big storage water tanks.

No, he has advocated a dangerous (potentially fatal - and indeed, deaths have occurred) quack cure.

Closing this now as a single Dengue Thread has been established in the health forum to replace what had become multiple threads in multiple forums. The epidemic is not only nation-wide but region-wide.

See http://www.thaivisa....engue-outbreak/ and please post any comments/questions regarding dengue there .
