Using a LG 705,which was bought in another country, and it can only use AIS pre paid 1GB unlimited monthly plan. Wanted to change to True or DTAC but unfortunatly it don't work. Know LG 705 is sluggish but with AIS its very slow.

I am not tech savvy so any advice or explanation are welcome.

Thanks

Your phone will only support 3G on the 900mhz, 1900mhz and 2100mhz frequencies while both DTAC and True both operate at 850 mhz

Can you share any details?

Where do you spend most of your time in Thailand? This is important as 3G coverage varies by frequency, service provider and location.

I think you'll have to probably rely on 2100 MHz 3G, and AIS probably has the most coverage. DTAC and TrueMove H are rolling out 2100 MHz 3G but it is not currently widely available.

I live in Samut Prakan. When I was back in Thailand I used my DTAC post paid data plan on LG 705 it only able to make voice call. Went to DTAC got a short reply "no signal" at True "cannot".

At AIS bought the pre paid know the LG is sluggish but with AIS it was very slow. Went to AIS was told to on roaming even I am not tech savvy know this is ridiculous.

Any suggestion? Thanks

Forgot mention before I post I went to one of the IT mall near my home.

Explained my problem to one of the shops the guy said no problem he can fix it for 500Thb but I was doubtful. Is this possible he can fix it.

Thanks

Where did you buy your phone? Is it perhaps locked to some service provider?

My sense is that it is unlocked but who knows where people buy their phones?

And you should be able to use the new AIS/2100 MHz 3G Freedom SIM and services which I reviewed in a link I provided.

Not sure what the "guy in the shop" is talking about. Did he provide any background, details or information?

The phone was given to me from my son who is working in Singapore.I think the phone is unlocked the only thing is when I switch it on there is a "starhub" but it goes off.My son told me it was free from his service provider in Singapore. This is only reason I am keeping it a present from my son.

As to the guy who can fix it he told me to leave the phone with him for 6 hours. The phone will be reset all data wiped out and after he "fix it" I can use True,DTAC and AIS.No details. Is this possible? I am doubtful.

Anyway I will take your advice in regard to the AIS hope the speed will be faster thanks

As far as I can tell that model can only support 900/1900/2100 MHz 3G. So you'd have to use AIS/900 or AIS/2100. TrueMove H/CAT and DTAC operate 3G on 850 MHz, for the most part as of today. I'm not certain TrueMove H and DTAC have widely deployed 2100 MHz as of today.

Further, your phone may be un-locked but it may have some limitations re: a StarHub-specific ROM and/or baseband which limits its capabilities? Maybe the "guy in the shop" plans to flash a generic 700 stock or custom ROM?

You could of course use slow speed GSM data (EDGE/~ 200 Kbps) with TrueMove H and/or DTAC/Happy.

OP, Loma is right in what he said above...

But what you should also understand is, all of the three major mobile carriers in Thailand -- AIS, DTAC and True -- all won concessions to operate new 3G service on the 2100 Mhz band and all three are in the process of rolling out that new service. AIS may be further along with that at this point, but it's kind of hard to tell, and very location dependant.

So eventually, certainly within the next year or two, depending on your use location, your current phone should be able to get 3G service on the 2100 Mhz band from any of those providers.

On those providers' older, existing networks -- which eventually will be phased out or replaced -- DTAC and True have 3G service on the 850 Mhz band while AIS has 3G service on the 900 Mhz band. So that would explain why only AIS would have worked for 3G, until very recently, on a 900/2100 Mhz only 3G mobile phone.

Is this one of these?

If so, I'm not surprised you're having problems with it. Not much by way of radio.

Regarding DTAC's TriNet which basically throws 2100Mhz into their frequency lineup, their web site says a person will get a SMS a least 2 days before it goes active in their area. See below quote/cut and paste from their website. The Thai wife and I are on the same DTAC postpaid 3G plan (but with individual accounts), we have done the online signup saying we want to use TriNet when it goes active, but neither of us have received any SMS yet over here in western Bangkok.

What will be the impact for you during the replacement period

During the replacement period, it is possible that your usage may be affected. We will try our very best to minimize the negative impact and you will get SMS telling when we are upgrading network in your area at least 2 days beforehand

Occasionally when doing mobile network scans on my phone here in western Bangkok, I do pick up 52003 which is AIS 2100Mhz, but I haven't seen any 52004 TrueMoveH 2100Mhz or 52005 DTAC 2100Mhz in my western Bangkok scans....nor when doing it once or twice in Nakhon Pathom province next door o Bangkok...didn't even see the 52003 AIS 2100Mhz. I expect 2100Mhz will be initially limited to large city areas regardless of the mobile carrier hype making it sound like it's "just going to be everywhere!"

My goodness, I just made a liar of myself...I'm setting here in western Bangkok on this fine Sunday morning just did a newtwork scan and "DTAC TriNet" is being shown on my S4...not the 05 number but "DTAC TriNet". Probably been a week since I did my last scan. First time I have seen that in my scans. But but no AIS 52003 or True 52004...I do see AIS and True specifically listed as such which I've always seen in any scans...just their standard networks I guess, but nothing listed by the 03 and 04 numbers.

Since DTAC is now showing DTAC TriNet, I wonder if they are getting closer to going operational but giving it a layman's title when showing up on a scan, versus just a meaningless number, 52005, which would probably be used during operational testing and if a person saw that on a scan probably wouldn't try to hook to it since they would have a clue who or what network 5200X was.

Then I tried connecting to the "DTAC TriNet" selection, it tried for a few seconds and came back saying my SIM card "Does not allow a connection to this network."

I then gave my wife's S4 at try...she has the same plan as me but registered as a separate account using her name/Thai ID card...wanted to see if maybe it was a Thai and farang thing especially if hers did connect...but it didn't connect but gave a different message...it said, "Can not connect...Try Later."

So, even though neither phone connected to DTAC TriNet, does the different messages received for my phone/account and for my Thai wife's phone/account indicate there might a Farang vs Thai account thing going on like it appears may be going on based on other threads/posts I read? I don't know. I may give DTAC a call next week to ask when 2100MHz will be active in my area (like I expect an answer) and/or ask if there is anything we need to do to connect to TriNet other than registering with DTAC for the service like we don't a couple of times. Each time we did that registration, we always got an immediate SMS response in Thai which google translated says "You have registered successfully. Waiting for more info to complete the task. I will let you know later." And I just did the TriNet registering thing again for both my phone number and the wife's phone number, and immediately got a SMS on each phone saying the same thing as quoted above.

Thanks to all who gave feedback.

Yes chicog it is same as picture you posted and yes there is no radio.

I also registered Tri-net for my post paid DTAC a few weeks ago for my Samsung but nothing.

My son emailed his blessing to get rid of the LG705 so where/how to sell it and what is fair price to get for it. Thanks

Assuming you have DTAC 850 MHz 3G coverage in your locations I'd recommend that you make sure any replacement phone supports 850 MHz and 2100 MHz 3G.

Some smaller counter-shops take used pones in trade if buying a new phone, and there are some consignment options, but I might not expect to get a lot for that phone.

Judging by what friends have been offered in the past 1000 baht always seems to be the maximum offer, regardless of the make of phone. The only time I've known any different is when a friend sold an i-phone 3S (locked to a UK network) for 5000 baht about three years ago.
