Two recent posts I've just read:

It has been said over and over, but you really want to tread carefully around other Farang in Thailand. Many many nutters about.

My theory is for what it's worth, is that anybody who decides to emigrate to the other side of the world, has run away from something or somebody.

In my case it was my Mother, only joking as I only settled here after she had passed away.

A bit harsh, some guys have done their shift and retired to the Sun, nothing wrong with that.

I'm here to provide a public service for the trolls, everybody needs a hate figure.

Nice broad sweeping statement, I am sure there are some nutters here but many good guys too. As long as your not looking for friends in the bar scene then there are plenty normal guys around.

My Auntie Mary got married to a kiwi and left Scotland for New Zealand over 50 years ago and only came back to visit once. I have visited her twice in New Zealand and she doesn't seem to have any issues apart from now being widowed and a bit dottled.

Yes every posting that's put up has to have a point, some could be just thought provoking however, I presume that's okay with you.

But as you want one, is their something that all expats have in common, a common denominator that runs through every one of us.

Uprooting ourselves from our families, friends, cultures you name it, is not the rule, in fact what I am saying is on reflection I think we are the exceptions to the rule.

Now before you all jump on that, I'm not saying this action is good or bad, everybody to their own.

I'm not criticising, doubting or voicing a concern about our actions, but wondering if there is a common explanation to them.

how many farangs have actually legally emigrated to Thailand...me thinks not many, if any

yes of course some may have done a runner because of one thing or another, others may have just fed up were they were living, others have come for work....but certainly could understand someone living on mud island all their lives wanting to get away from there once they have retired and have a few pennies in the piggy bank

Not everybody who decides to move country is running away. Sure, there are some, but others make the move for a multitude of other reasons. Work, past experience of the area/country, married to a native of that country to name a few.

I am guilty of all three above, but am not running away from anyone or anything..................

Especially when the quotes are misleadingly selective. Generally speaking, I would say farangs here were more contemptuous than contemptible, and perhaps the commonest flaw is their unjustified prejudice against fellow foreigners.

Your 'Theory' for what it's worth? Is based on what? What statistical data or analysis do you have for your Theory? How many actual 'runners' have you met since you have been here?

it has been said over and over? By whom and for what reason? Analyze that.

Is it because of the likes of the time share touts who infest Patong Beach or the Boiler Rooms of BKK? Or that we are subjected to endless stories in the media whenever a Non Thai criminal on the run makes their way to the LOS. Not to mention the intrepid, amateur, roving reporters seeking out stories of wretched po white trash eking out an existence in SE Asia, escaping from 'demons' of their own making at home. Is it any wonder that Thailand has become, for some, synonymous with people on the run.

I have been accused, more than a few times, and mostly by my peers, for doing a 'runner', and even 'hiding out' in the LOS. They would prefer I stay home and be miserable with them, Misery loves company. On the other hand I have also had a few who reckon they wish they had the guts to do what I have done. As they grow unhappier and more disillusioned with their lives at home.

Most of those doing the 'accusing', when the truth is realised, lead dull, mundane and unhappy existences at home. Working in jobs they hate. Chronically whinging. Struggling to meet the ever increasing cost of living as their Super and Pension Funds fail or battle to keep pace. Their once safe, friendly, suburban sleepy hollow turned into a multi-cultural disaster which has become an expensive and frantic nightmare, Where they are too scared to step out from the sanctuary of their 'castle' after dark for fear of becoming a victim of a random act of violence. Whilst they bar and alarm their houses for fear of a violent home invasion.

Packing up and moving to another country, Thailand, is not an easy thing to do. It actually takes a bit of guts. (unless you are completely stupid) Especially for the majority who place themselves immediately behind the 8 ball by rendering themselves illiterate the moment they step off the aircraft. Think for a minute if you were living in the country of your birth and you could not read, write or speak your native language. Scarey thought is it not?

Running? Having the courage to seize the day, take charge of, and change your life, by taking a risk, is not the natural act of one who 'runs'. IMHO.

I think you would find, if you properly researched and tested your theory you might even find there is perhaps a silent majority who are not 'runners' at all. Far from it.

but yes... unfortunately I have come accross quite a few <deleted> in this place.... best thing to do is keep yourself to youself, mind your own business, enjoy the weather, the lifestyle... and be happy

It's not the weather that's miserable, it's you. Personally, I enjoy a slightly dreich day from time to time, when you can get good value out of your gloves, and perhaps a coat and hat to boot, not to mention boots. If you can't hold your head up high and be joyful because of a bit or rain and cloud, perhaps you need to strengthen your spirit. In Scotland, we have a lot of strong spirits.

Like me many people come here for the work, not running or hiding from anything. Agree though that there are quite a few nutters around, but being English i am used to that.
