I have a question. My GF is Thai of course. If I take a job in Germany, how likely is it that I can get her into Germany. I am American. I checked out some info on the Schengen visa before but I still don't know. I have not found anything too clear on an American in Germany. TV is the greatest, thanks - Sunn

Theoretically your girl friend can visit you in Germany on a Schengen visa for up to three months within half a year. However, she will find it very difficult to convince the embassy that she is firmly rooted in Thailand if she can spend that much time in Germany.

If your girl friend wants to live with you in Germany, you need to marry her unless she qualifies for a visa independently of you (e. g. for studying).

There is no reason why she would not get a visa however this will be a visit visa for 90 days so basically she can come for 2 x 90 days per year (90 days Germany---90 days Thailand----90 days Germany and so on).

To apply for the visa you must already be here for minimum of 3 months could be 6 months i need to check.

I'll post up a rough guide in a few days of what i done. i'm a UK expat living in Germany there was not a lot of info for people in my situation. if you have everything in order the Germans are extremely efficient whole process for me took 3 weeks from me getting the paper work, to her getting the visa, it took 3 days in total from when she had her appointment to getting her passport delivered to the village in Isaan!

If you need any info PM me.

Hi, I can help you with this as I have just been through the same process. It is the most frustrating and time consuming process you can imagine.

I don't have time now to tell you what we went through but I'll tell you some important things.

Most of the thai visa applicants have german partners, fiances or husbands. The embassy doesn't want to know about people like you or me who come from someone else (I am an Australian)

The usual downloadable Schengen application form on the internet is not any good for Germany. They want a special one with a barcode, but see if you can find that info easily on the net.

Secondly, without being married you can forget it.The thai girls who have german partners need a german to provide a guarantee from the german immigration office in Germany to guarantee that the thai girl will be covered for every eventuality that the germans can possibly come up with.I doubt that you will get even a stupid german to do this.

When we went back to the embassy for the third time after getting married the day before the gestapo on the door wouldn't let me go in with my wife to the area where she had to lodge the docs even though I tried to do so.He said that it was her visa and not mine so NO NO NO entry.I have no doubt this was because my wife was questioned each of the three times she went there and like most thais she can be intimidated by officials, and they didn't want me there to stand up for her.The questions they asked her were so stupid and pointless as to defy logic but you have to be careful about what you say because their decision rests on your replies.

We also had about 150 pages of documents but without being married they were useless.

I hope this saves you a lot of trouble.

You are American and looking at taking a job in Germany, correct? I think one thing that might be overlooked here is are you looking at commercial work in Germany or are you looking at working in Germany as a US DoD contractor, government civilian, or a military member? As a someone in one of those categories, the process is sometimes handled differently than it would be as a regular civilian with a normal commercial job and working/residence visa in Germany. The SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) might help you out depending on your relationship. If you do plan to marry her, she will get the same rights you would get under that agreement.

As just a friend or girlfriend, she is likely to go through the same process as any other Thai individual as if you were not even there and basically be on her own trying to get there.

I can sympathise with your feelings but like they said at the door, its her visa application, not yours.

When my wife applied for her Schengen we got the same treatment, I wasn't allowed inside. This wasn't at the embassy in Thailand, we were in N. Africa at the time so it looks like its standard practice for them.

What got me more annoyed was the guy on the door insisted on documents that she didn't need - I'm an EU passport holder so she was exempt from some of the requirements, didn't matter what I said, he wouldn't listen. After the interview they asked her to come back with even more stuff that according to their own website she was exempt from supplying.

In the end I phoned the embassy and was lucky enough to get someone who actually listened to what I had to say, 15 mins later my wife called me to say that the embassy had been in touch and her visa was ready for collection.

Briando, I totally agree with what you are saying and I am actually German, but not a "good" one. I experienced almost the same and I speak German, but in the embassy you have typical buerocrats and some of them don't even speak English. I wish you good luck and don't be too disappointed if you don't get the visa. I would get in contact with a German speaking visa agent and let them try it. rolleyes.gif

I feel for you my friend. It would be difficult if you were a German citizen but as an American it's going to be much harder.

When my wife submitted her application at the visa centre I actually was allowed inside with her as they didn't understand certain things and I had to explain. So it's up to the agency.

There really is no need for an agent for this its a waste of money they cannot tell you anything you cant find out for yourself. I would also decide on taking this job if it suited you and not include your GF into the equation.

I am Austrian and made some positive Visa applications for my Thai and once even Cambodia Gfs without any refused.

But I made them at my home embassy.

So it is a bit more difficult for you, but it is possible, the outcome of the Visa application process is surely not known.

Try to make an appointment at the German Embassy in Bangkok and tell them about your plans, ideas and thoughts.

Hear what they answer and go from there, decide than what you can do, want to do. rolleyes.gif
