Traveling Sailor
"The premier stressed that there will be legal consequences for those starting rumors. As for the discovery of rotten rice by the Opposition, she said the government needs to take some time to investigate the matter." Yup! Takes time to plan a good cover-up. Thai at Heart
By rice producers, presumably she means farmers. A mill doesn't produce or manufacture rice, it processes it. The thing is, if the levels of heavy metals as mentioned by the report in the USA are correct, it has ALWAYS been there. Now, forget iodine, but if you eat oodles of lead contaminated rice for a lifetime, it can't do wonders for mental development can it. http://www.establishmentpost.com/lead-contamination-a-blow-to-thailand-rice/ The researchers believe the high level of lead contamination found in Thailand rice is believed to come from contaminated soil and irrigation water rather than introduced during rice processing. Thai at Heart
http://www.consumerreports.org/content/dam/cro/magazine-articles/2012/November/Consumer%20Reports%20Arsenic%20in%20Food%20November%202012_1.pdf Interesting to see how many brands of supposedly "organic" Thai rice there are on the shelves in the USA. I thought the farmers were moaning about the increase in costs of fertilisers and pesticides??
MaxLee
PM urging for whereabouts of contaminated rice producers "and in the mean time I'm going on another shopping trip,... bye bye.... " So no wonder she doesn't even know nor care what's going on around Thailand....
TallGuyJohninBKK
I suspect there's something more than just rice that's rotten here...
rbrooks
Is she going to throw the Americans in jail for finding lead in the rice? To what extreme will she go to hide this mess she has on her hands? She will foolishly demand an apology from the U.S. government and then she will be the spotlight for a new spoof on SNL ( Saturday Night Live)
rubl
"Ms. Yingluck said although there might have been a few errors in the production of rice at some rice mills and packaging plants, people should not believe rumors and jump into conclusion that Thai rice as a whole is contaminated." Dear PM, could you please report on those possibly few errors in the production. I'm sure lots of people would like to know more
