BANGKOK: -- Seven major Thai online service providers will soon start working with the Thai government to create new guidelines for tackling the spread of illegal content on the web. But just who those new guidelines will affect and what specific content they'll restrict isn't yet clear.

The group said they would look at regulating content related to pornography, terrorism, drugs, spam, phishing and copyright infringement.

Thailand already blocks some pornography sites as well as some political pages.

When it comes to intellectual property, the Land of Smiles is a well-known Wild West for online pirates. Torrentors take note you may want to invest in a VPN if you have not already.

A government agency, the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA), will work with the PKI Association, Thailand Information Security Association, Internet Foundation for the Development of Thailand, Thailand ISP Association, Thai e-Commerce Association, Google Asia Pacific and eBay to create the country's first transparent, though self-enforced, code of conduct for stemming illegal content on the web. It's noteworthy that the newspaper uses this photo of a foreign person sitting at an ancient PC, monitor and printer setup. The newspaper should post up photos of the numerous computer piracy rooms manned by Thais that are around.

and top of the list will be criticism of the PM and the government.

In the interests of the public good the government cannot allow the truth to be told

The removal of illegal content is a nice cover for the government to exercise more control and ensure the only news, only " truth " will be that approved by the Ministry of Propaganda and in the name of an ethical role model who only wants transparency and justice.

Totally agree. Doing a Vietnam here (where it is easy enough to get around the censorship).

The issue will be defamation of people or companies. The ridiculous defamation laws mean that if you say, "so and so is a ****", all they have to prove is the tiniest amount of damage, and you have commited a CRIMINAL offence.

That would basically stop all internet discussion boards, and put a complete stop to thinhs like people discussing "I think that Thai rice is *****," be it good bad or indifferent. You simply won't be able to discuss anything. Political discussion would disappear in a moment, because the moment you made any inference about anyone, the webmasters would be legally obliged to take it down. Quite how Thaivisa survives without a lot more censorship I have no idea. Thailand would become a country where your statements would be limited to the spoken word, and only between those you trust implicitly.

Thailand do block some pornographic sites, but when you are surfing thai web pages, Thai pornographic sites pop up. Access seems to be easier than ever. !

Thank you for your fantastic insight Mr. Gump.
