PM affirms rice production process free of chemicals

BANGKOK, 20 July 2013 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has affirmed that all processes in the rice production have been following safety procedures and quality standard, adding that the rice does not contain any chemical residues.

During the “PM Yingluck Meets the People” program, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said all rice production processes, ranging from milling process to chemical inspection, are conducted upon safety and quality standard procedures.

The premier also ordered all related agencies, especially the Public Health Ministry, to strictly and constantly check for cleanliness and chemical residues in rice, in order to regain confidence among buyers and investors on the quality of Thai rice.

Miss Yingluck also mentioned about her visit to OTOP center in Saraburi Province, saying the Saraburi OTOP center is a good example for all provinces to follow as it has its own operating system and creates more income to the locals.

BANGKOK, July 20 - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Saturday reaffirmed that Thai rice is not contaminated, saying that she has ordered for the inspection of rice quality to ease public worries.

The Thai premier gave assurances on her weekly televised address today following reports that the rice was contaminated.

Ms Yingluck said Thai rice has not had such problems as reported in the news. If there was contamination, an investigation should be conducted to find out at what stage it is occurring during rice production, whether in milling, packaging, or transportation.

She said the public should not jump to conclusions that all Thai rice is contaminated, saying this perception will affect consumer confidence and Thai rice exports, as the image of Thai rice would be tarnished.

The government will inform the public over the investigation of alleged contaminated packed rice to ease public worries, said the premier, adding that the public health ministry has also been instructed to strictly inspect the quality of Thai rice.

Ms Yingluck, who visited the Ayutthaya rice factory of CP Group's International Trading Business Group which manufactures and distributes 'Royal Umbrella Rice', said that she has observed rice production processes here--from milling to storage to inspections to packaging to transporting--and can guarantee that Thai rice is safe and meets all safety and quality standard.

The premier however noted that all food-related factories need to carefully maintain high quality of food production.

The premier's remarks came as Thailand's leading rice packer 'Royal Umbrella Rice' earlier lodged a complaint against Bangkok television host Suttipong Thammawut for allegedly spreading false claims via social media that its rice was contaminated and was under standard.

The company said that the TV host's claims were untrue and caused both Thai and foreign consumers to lose confidence in the quality of Royal Umbrella brand rice. (MCOT online news)

After visiting a carefully selected single factory she makes a bold statement about Thai rice in general. With more and more contaminated rice appearing she actually should know that it is sheer folly to make such a blanket statement at this time.

But it shows nicely why Thaksin picked her as proxy PM.

She says what she's required to say. Even so, she would have a tad more credibility if she didn't personally vouch for the veracity of all Thai rice, and instead focused on the importance of objective and random testing of rice stocks. By her blanket statement, she is setting herself up for a fall, whenever a problem batch of rice shows up. Her handlers (Thaksin himself?) should be a bit more broadminded (no pun intended) ....in what they tell her to say.

Actually its extremely reassuring that after stringent personal testing in front of the nations media the independent laboratory of Yingluck has been able to state with complete confidence that all Thai rice is free of chemicals.

Think I'll go down the market and get some salad for dinner.

I do not understand how the rice could not have chemical contamination, when Methyl Bromide is used in the process. Government have found rice in the market with Methyl Bromide over and above allowable limits.. OH! now I understand, do like other Asian countries, when contamination is found that are over specification, change the specification. Now everything passes.

I suppose it is possible that the rice production process could be chemical free, but it is what they do to the rice after it is processed.

After not being able to sell the rice for a year or two, they have to repeatedly spray chemicals on the stockpiles and underneath what it is sitting on, to kill all of the various pests that want to eat the rice.

Take that, and add in the dangers from all of the low quality, un-regulated rice, smuggled in from neighbouring countries, and mixed in with the thai rice, and it would be next to impossible to declare

that Thai Rice is absolutely safe to consume (with a straight face) anyway.

It's a bit like her saying ''I buy all my Handbags and Boots in Thailand because i know they are all genuine products '' LOL.

She definitely needs to stick to shopping. Bloody unbelievable what comes out of her mouth sometimes all the time. Shame she did not put the lid on the revelation on the fact that there IS contamination in the rice as we were all made aware of at the beginning of last week!

And still more incredible stories are rolled out...........Imagine the desperation that must be driving this continuing farce.
