my old nokia phone gets too old.....I need a new one.

my requirements:

not too big.

can handle 3 G networks not only in Thailand

if possible a phone that is very popular in the community so there are own android versions for it and I don't depend on the company for updates.

strong battery

I want to use it:

as phone

to get internet connection on the laptop or tablet

maybe sometimes as GPS

I don't

play games on it, use facebook, use the camera, etc etc

any recommendations?

Get a second hand SIII off someone who's upgraded to an S4.

I thought of that already

but it says 850/2100 and 900/2100 which one to use, and will it work everywhere?

Samsung add a lot things to Android, is it easy to install a clean Android?

It tells 4 inch display, that also is pretty big in the trouser, smaller would be better...

I bought an i-mobile as suggested here when I had a similar question. Seem popular in Thailand, various reasonably priced models with current android Jelly Bean and virtually no bloat ware.

Battery life of my IQ 1.1 is not great but if you keep Wi-fi and GPS on a lot then most android phones will need recharging every day.

You can use an app like Juice Defender to assist in reducing battery drain.

As to working everywhere, depends on what you mean by everywhere e.g. Japan is usually a problem for most phones not designed for Japan.

My lower end model can act as a hotspot if required so I suppose many models can.

Smaller than 4" limits you to lower spec phones as the better phones with a decent screen for internet use are usually 4" plus.

There are a few threads about new android phones if you scroll down the last couple of pages.

Everywhere I mean:

Thailand

Malaysia

Hongkong

(China?? maybe not important)

Austria

Indonesia

Definitely not Japan

I thought of a brand name phone with a strong community and roms to download, but if the i-mobile is popular here than it might be the smarter choice.

My impression is people trying different ROMs do so on the more upmarket phones, and smaller than 4" mostly means lower spec phones now. My phone has a 4.5" screen and while I would prefer something smaller, the smaller models didn't suit my needs as well so I ended up going with the larger model. Samsung phones seem to come with a lot of Samsung apps that not everyone wants, whereas i-mobile don't.

One thing about i-mobile is they can have 2 models of some phones, 3G will work with one carrier on one model but maybe not the other depending on the frequency the phone is capable of so if you have a preferred carrier in another country it might be worth checking if compatible before you buy. For Thailand, if there are two models available for an i-mobile phone then the shop will ask you who your current carrier is e.g. AIS, Dtac and sell you the appropriate model. I looked at other threads discussing i-mobile phones and the feedback was generally positive so while initially I was going to get a Samsung I ended up with an i-mobile. Samsung is the market leader but i-mobile seems better value so if brand name isn't important to you then i-mobile is worth a look.
